Ithaca Picks Up Two 5-2 Wins Over Houghton

HOUGHTON, N.Y. -- With a pair of 5-2 victories Saturday at Houghton College, the Ithaca College baseball team improved its overall record to 9-4 this season and also extended its winning streak to five games. Ithaca batted in the bottom of the innings in each game as the home team. The games were played at Houghton's Kerr-Pegula Stadium, but originally scheduled to be played at Freeman Field Ithaca is slated to begin its home season with a doubleheader Tuesday at 2 p.m. against Oneonta.

ITHACA 5, HOUGHTON 2 | Box Score and Play-by-Play

Brandon Diorio pitched four and a third effective innings in relief to earn his first victory of the season in the opening game of the doubleheader. He allowed three hits, one unearned run, with two strikeouts and one walk issued.

Houghton took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first before Ithaca took the lead with single runs in the second and third. A three-run fifth inning gave the Bombers a more comfortable margin for the late innings. Ithaca's five runs came in on just four hits in the game, all of which were singles.

Luke Stark singled in Brian Burns in the second for Ithaca. Matt Connolly scored the go-ahead run in the second on an RBI groundout. In the fifth, the first two runners reached base and moved up on a sacrifice bunt. The bases were loaded on an intentional walk, and then with two outs Burns was hit by a pitch, Steven Yanchus walked and Christian Brown walked to all force in a run.

John Stanley had two triples among Ithaca's nine total hits in a game-two victory. Ithaca scored single runs in the first, fourth and sixth innings and added two insurance runs in the bottom of the seventh.

In the first, Stanley tripled and later scored on a sacrifice fly by Tim Henry to tie the score 1-1. Ithaca went ahead in the fourth on a bases-loaded single from Steven Yanchus to bring in Henry from third. A two-out rally in the sixth gave Ithaca a 3-1 lead. Colby Gee and Brian Burns singled, followed by an RBI double from Yanchus. Ithaca's seventh-inning runs scored on a two-run triple from Stanley that scored Matt Connolly and Luke Stark.

Andrew Sanders was the starting pitcher for Ithaca and pitched seven effective innings, allowing two runs on seven hits. One of the runs was earned, and he had one strikeout and didn't issue a walk. He improved to 1-1 on the season with the victory. Jimmy Wagner pitched the final two innings to pick up his second save of the year. He didn't allow a hit, struck out four Houghton batters, and walked one.
