Fisher, Naz and Stevens Win E8 Match-ups
ST. JOHN FISHER 10, HARTWICK 4
The St. John Fisher College men's lacrosse team had ten different scorers en route to a 10-4 victory over host Hartwick College to earn its first win in the Empire 8.
Fisher moves to 4-3 overall and 1-1 in conference play while Hartwick falls to 2-5, 0-2.
The Hawks held a 2-1 advantage early in the game but Fisher scored the final three goals of the first quarter to take a 4-1 lead, all of which came in the final 2:31 of the period. Brett Farrell found Kevin Bronson to start the 3-0 Fisher run. Farrell helped close out the surge with time ticking down in the quarter finding Nick Rossi with just :1 second remaining to make it 4-1.
Fisher upped its lead to 7-3 at the half. Jeff Wester connected with Farrell to make it 6-3 with just under five minutes to play and Greg Ramsden scored an unassisted goal two minutes later.
Offense was at a premium in the second half with the teams combining to score just four total goals.
In the third quarter Fisher and Hartwick each notched at tally as the scoreboard read 8-4 in favor of the Cardinals. Wagner hooked up with Wester for the lone Fisher goal of the quarter.
Jake Aldrich netted his first-career goal in the fourth quarter and Nick Costello rounded out the scoring for Fisher off a feed from Drew Brown.
Farrell paced the Cardinals attack recording four points while Wagner and Wester each tallied a goal and an assist.
Tanner Swan picked up his first-career win in net posting eight saves.
NAZARETH 18, ELMIRA 11
Troy Haefele scored five goals and Luke Wooters added two goals and four assists for visiting Nazareth Saturday as the Golden Flyers defeated Elmira in an Empire 8 Conference men's lacrosse game, 18-11.
The game, played at Elmira Free Academy, enabled Nazareth to record its second straight win and to improve to 4-5 overall and 2-0 in conference play. Elmira is 0-6 overall and 0-2 in the Empire 8. In addition to Haefele and Wooters, senior midfielder Brian Wright scored three times, sophomore Matt O'Neill scored twice and seniors Chris Aycock and Collins Clark each scored once and added two assists.
Elmira scored the first two goals of the game before Nazareth scored seven straight to take command. Five different players scored in the first period, starting with Wright, who tallied off an assist from O'Neill. Goals by Nick Arnold, Haefele, O'Neill and Aycock followed as Nazareth led 5-2 after 15 minutes.
Wright's second goal of the game came just 53 seconds into the second quarter and freshman Luke Longo netted his second goal of the season just 14 seconds after that to extend the lead to 7-2. Elmira interrupted the string by scoring three of the next four goals, but Haefele scored three more times before halftime and Wooters also scored to make it 12-6 Nazareth at the break.
Haefele's fifth goal of the game came at 11:37 of the third quarter, but Elmira delivered three straight goals in a span of 1:08 to close within 13-9 with 8:16 left in the third. The Golden Flyers doused any Soargin Eagle comeback hopes by scoring the next four goals bridging the third and fourth quarters. Wooters' second goal of the game made it 14-9, then senior Chris Benza scored his first goal of the season even though Nazareth was in a man-down situation. Clark added a man-up goal off a pass from Wooters with 1:16 left in the quarter, then O'Neill scored the first goal of the fourth quarter as Nazareth's lead swelled to 17-9. A man-up goal by Wright, his seventh goal over the last two games, closed out the Nazareth scoring.
Nazareth enjoyed a 62-37 advantage in shots and junior Drew Simoneau had his usual strong day at the faceoff x by winning 21 of 28 draws. Sophomore Scott Brown played all 60 minutes in goal and had 12 saves. Myles Richards and Brian Conzola each scored three goals for Elmira and David Evert had five assists.
STEVENS 18, ALFRED 9
The Stevens Institute of Technology men's lacrosse team opened up Empire 8 Conference play with an 18-9 rain-soaked victory over Alfred University on Saturday at the De Baun Athletic Complex. Stevens has now won three consecutive games and is 4-5 overall and 1-0 in the Empire 8, while Alfred falls to 2-5, 0-2.
Stevens battled with Alfred through three quarters and led, 10-9, heading to the fourth, but pulled away from the Saxons with eight fourth period goals.
The Ducks jumped out to a 3-1 lead in the first quarter after Alfred opened the contest with an early 1-0 advantage. The Saxons scored just 45 seconds into the game, but Steven answered with a man-up goal from senior Charlie Cronin at the 12:39 mark off a pass from classmate Sean Scrudato. Midway through the quarter, sophomore Andrew Scrutchfield took a pass from Cronin to give the Ducks their first lead of the game before sophomore Matt Ferentini ended the opening 15 minutes with his 18th goal of the season with 1:11 to go which was assisted by sophomore Anthony Raposo.
Alfred fought back in the second with a pair of goals in the first 3:11 to knot the game up at 3-3. Scrutchfield put Stevens back in front with a man-up tally with 7:39 left off another assist from Cronin. The Saxon answered with their own man-up advantage in the final two minutes for another deadlock at 4-4, but sophomore Michael Serrante found the back of the net with just 16 seconds remaining to send the Ducks into the locker room with a 5-4 edge. Cabrini 20, Ithaca 11
The 10th-ranked Ithaca College men's lacrosse team (7-2) suffered its second loss of the season Saturday afternoon falling to third-ranked Cabrini (9-0), 20-11, as the Cavaliers remained perfect in 2014. Ithaca's only other loss was to top-ranked RIT, 15-11, on March 1.
Cabrini powered to victory behind two seven-goal quarters. The Bombers owned a 4-2 edge after the first, and improved their gap to 5-2 to open the second, but the Cavaliers netted seven straight to lead 9-5 at the break. Ten scoreless minutes opened the third before Cabrini crept ahead 13-7. The Cavaliers went on to post seven scores to Ithaca's four in the fourth for a 20-11 final.
Freshman John Januszkiewicz recorded a Bomber-best performance of five points on four scores and an assist. Seniors Pat Slawta and Ryan Burns each tallied twice with Burns making one assist. Junior James Manilla and sophomore Michael Walker contributed one goal and dished out two assists apiece, while freshman Andrew Rodenhouse added one score and senior Andrew Kristy an assist.
Senior Brandon Henne won 13 faceoffs and freshman Grant Osadchey went 3-for-3. Henne, Kristy, Manilla and junior Jimmy Ryan collected five ground balls each. Sophomore Eli Gobrecht forced a pair of turnovers.
Sophomore Scott Sidnam made seven saves in goal and collected a pair of ground balls.
Ithaca's 11 scores matched the most Cabrini has allowed in a single game all season.
Cabrini narrowly outshot Ithaca, 42-38, collected 49 ground balls to the Bombers' 43 and led faceoffs 19-16.
