Houghton Goes 0-for-2 on Opening Day

CLERMONT, Fla. -- The Houghton softball team got the 2014 season underway with two losses in Clermont, Fla.

The Highlanders opened the campaign with a 10-0 loss to Susquehanna University. The Crusaders no-hit the Highlanders in five innings.

The second game was a 9-1 loss to St. Vincent College. Houghton allowed two runs in the bottom of the first before pulling one back in the top of the third to trail 2-1. The Bearcats scored two more in the bottom of the third and added five more in the bottom of the fifth to end the scoring.

Samantha Patoff (Mississauga, ON, Canada, Gordon Graydon Memeorial) and Bailey Shattell (Syracuse, NY, Faith Heritage) had Houghton's only hits on the afternoon. Sarah Beirne (Port Jervis, NY, Port Jervis) gave up 12 hits and all nine runs (seven earned) in four innings pitched.

The Highlanders (0-2) are back in action for two games on Tuesday, taking on Lebanon Valley College at 1 p.m. and Rose Hulman Institute of Technology at 3 p.m.
