Stevens stands second following winter season

After the completion of the 2013-14 Empire 8 winter season the conference office has released the current Commissioner’s Cup standings.

Ithaca College leads the way with an .851 percentage, narrowly edging out Stevens Institute of Technology with .815. The Bombers had a strong showing across the board during the winter season winning four conference titles, which included women’s basketball, women’s swimming and diving, and men’s and women’s indoor track and field.

Stevens won the men’s swimming and diving title for the second straight year and third time in program history. The Ducks also finished as runner up in women’s indoor track and field, women’s swimming and women’s basketball.

Third, fourth and fifth place in the standings are separated by .06 hundredths.  Nazareth ranks third with .615 percent as the Golden Flyers finished second in men’s basketball and fourth in women’s swimming and diving. St. John Fisher comes in at .562 percent after a second place showing for men’s indoor track and field while the women’s team placed third.

Hartwick (.551) jumped two spots from the fall standings after winning the E8 Championship in men’s basketball and finishing third in women’s basketball and men’s and women’s swimming.

Elmira, Utica and Alfred complete the standings.

Commissioner's Cup points are awarded based on each team's finish in the Empire 8 standings at the completion of the season. Points are awarded on a scale dependent upon the number of schools that sponsor the sport (affiliate members are not calculated into the point scale. Houghton is also not calculated into the standings based on NCAA provisional status). The conference championship team in each sport receives the highest amount of points, followed by the runner-up. Teams tied for a position are ranked based on tiebreaker scenarios. The actual amount of points earned is then divided by the amount of possible points for each school based on conference-sponsored sports to determine percentage.
