ECAC Honors Four E8 Athletes
Four Empire 8 Athletic Conference student-athletes have been honored as the Corvias Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) Upstate Athletes of the Week for their performances during the week of February 24-March 2.
Women's Basketball - Upstate
Mary Kate Tierney – Ithaca College
Senior, Guard, Rochester, NY
Tierney was named the Empire 8 Women’s Basketball Championship Most Valuable Player after averaging 18 points and 11 rebounds in two games as the top-seeded Bombers won their third consecutive Empire 8 title and sixth overall. Tierney led Ithaca with 22 points and set the program's single-season record for 3-pointers made in the 73-69 semifinal win against St. John Fisher. Tierney also had 12 rebounds in the contest and made 5-of-7 free throws. She added 14 points and 10 boards in the 63-51championship victory over Stevens.
Men's Basketball - Upstate
Jared Suderley – Hartwick College
Senior, Forward, Newport, NY
Suderley helped guide the Hawks to their second conference title on Saturday. Suderley led all scorers with 27 points on 10-15 shooting and grabbed seven boards in Friday’s semifinal 90-85 win over Alfred. In the 67-62 championship win over third-seeded Nazareth, Suderley finished with 21 points as he eclipsed the 2,000 point mark for his career. He also added 14 rebounds to his stat line. Hartwick earned automatic qualification to the NCAA Division III Men's Basketball Championships and will be making its second appearance in the last three years.
Women's Indoor Field Athletes - Upstate
Rebecca Graudons – Alfred University
Senior, Mayfield, NY
Graudons won a state title in the pole vault at the New York State Collegiate Track Conference (NYSTC) Championships. Her vault of 3.60 meters broke the school and state indoor championship meet record of 3.58 meters she set at the 2012 indoor state championships. It also broke a St. Lawrence Newell Fieldhouse record and tied the NYSCTC association record. Graudons' state title in the indoor pole vault is her third consecutive. She finished second at the state indoor championships as a freshman in 2011.
Men's Indoor Track Athletes - Upstate
Devin Cornelius - St. John Fisher College
Sophomore, Deansboro, NY
The sophomore broke both the New York State Collegiate Track Conference and the Championship meet records in the heptathlon. He scored 4,818 points which currently ranks him 13th overall in the nation. Of the seven events held in the heptathlon, Cornelius placed first in three and captured second in two en route to the win.
