Cardinals, Pioneers and Saxons Win Big

Utica 14, SUNYIT 4
The Utica College men's lacrosse team won its season-opener for the fourth consecutive year as the Pioneers netted seven third quarter goals on their way to a 14-4 victory over local rival SUNYIT on Thursday afternoon at Charles A. Gaetano Stadium. The Pioneers have now won three straight against the Wildcats, outscoring SUNYIT 53-7 over the course of three seasons.

The Pioneers jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the first 11:02 of the contest behind a goal each from Trent Jacobs, Corey Thompson, Scott Baron and Christian Reiller. SUNYIT responded with a goal of its own before the first quarter closed to cut its deficit to three, 4-1, headed into the second quarter of action.

Utica put three straight goals on the board to take a commanding 7-1 lead with 3:50 to go in the first half of play. Baron and Jacobs each notched their second of the game, while freshman Ross Cree registered his first collegiate goal the close out the Pioneer spurt. Utica led 7-2 as the halftime horn sounded.

The Pioneers rattled off six consecutive goals in the first 7:02 of the third quarter to extend their lead to 13-2 as they essential put the game out of reach. Six different Pioneers scored in the stretch. SUNYIT outscored Utica 2-1 in the final 19:11 of action but it proved to be too late as Utica took home the ten goal victory.

SUNYIT was led by two goals from senior attack Adam Reynolds, while Nicholas Levanti added one goal and one assist. Wildcat junior goalie Jeffrey Melnik was busy in the cage as he stopped 22 shots in 60 minutes of action.

UC senior goalie Cory Spisak  made three saves and allowed three goals as he picked up the victory, while freshman net minder Kobi Johnson came on in relief and stopped five shots and allowed just one goal in 15 minutes of work.

The Pioneers converted on 29-of-31 clears and picked up 48 ground balls compared to 33 by the visitors. Utica also went 1-for-3 with an extra man.


St. John Fisher 14, DeSales 1
The St. John Fisher College men's lacrosse team scored the game's first 11 goals, coasting to a 14-1 victory over DeSales University in Tampa, Florida at Skyline Field on Thursday.

It was a lopsided game from the start as the Cardinals finished the game outshooting the Bulldogs 31-10. 

With the win Fisher improves to 2-0 on the season while DeSales falls to 0-3.

Fisher did most of its damage in the first quarter, netting six goals to take command beginning with Taylor Muztagago taking a feed from Kevin Bronson seven minutes in.  Brett Farrell scored all of his game-high three goals in the first stanza for the Cardinals.

After a hot start in the first quarter, Fisher tallied two more goals in the second to take an 8-0 lead into the break, including an unassisted goal from Greg Ramsden

That lead would blossom to 11-0 after three quarters before DeSales finally found the back of the net at the 12:22 mark of the fourth quarter for its only goal of the game.

The Cardinals saw two freshman record their first collegiate goals in the win as Tim Wagner and Matt Colicchia each ended the day with two goals apiece.

Senior Jeff Wester chipped in two goals and two assists for the Cardinals, while Drew BrownMike DeMar and Joe Masterpol each contributed a goal.


Alfred 20, Hilbert 7
The Alfred University men's lacrosse team handed visiting Hilbert College a 20-7 loss, Thursday evening at Yunevich Stadium. This win moves AU to 2-1 on the season.

Alfred found the back of the net seven times for the first and second quarters and tacked on six more goals during the second half.

For the game, the Saxons outshot the Hawks 49 to 26, held a 35-13 groundball advantage, and won 21 face-offs to Hilbert's seven.

Senior midfielder Brendan Sullivan and junior attacker Nicolas Wood each netted a team-high four goals for Alfred. Freshman midfielder Nick Skibitsky, freshman attacker John Winchell, freshman midfielder Derek Bishopp and freshman midfielder Brett McMichael combined for eight goals, scoring two each.

Freshman midfielder Jimmy Pratti (Minisink, NY/Minisink Valley) went 21 for 28 on face-off wins and picked up 12 groundballs.

Junior goalie Cody O'Connor made six saves in the first half. Junior Tyler Beyor (two saves) played 25 minutes of the second half and freshman Cody Cornelius (three saves) took over for the remaining 5 minutes.
