No. 20 Ithaca Women's Lacrosse Falls to No. 10 Geneseo in Season Opener
ITHACA, N.Y. – The 20th-ranked Ithaca College women's lacrosse team (0-1) suffered a season-opening loss to 10th-ranked Geneseo (2-0) Thursday afternoon at Higgins Stadium.
The Knights held a two-goal advantage at halftime and edged Ithaca 4-3 in the second. Geneseo and Ithaca exchanged goals for a 2-2 deadlock at 14:31, before the Knights tallied three straight. A pair of
Ally Runyon (Fairport, N.Y./Fairport) goals was split by a Geneseo score for a 6-4 gap at the half. The Knights extended their lead to 7-3 to open the second frame, but Ithaca netted three straight to knot the game at 7-7. Geneseo held the Bombers scoreless and closed out the game with three of their own for a 10-7 final.
The game was tight across the board. Ithaca outshot Geneseo, 19-18, collected 15 ground balls to the Knights' 14, and won 10 draws. Geneseo won nine. Ithaca led the turnover count, 16-15.
Runyon, who converted 2-of-3 free position shots, led the Bombers with a hat trick, while senior
Becky Guzzo (Baldwinsville, N.Y./C.W. Baker) added one score and an assist. Additional goals came from juniors
Niki Standera (Penfield, N.Y./Penfield) and
Molly Fischer (Aquinnah, Mass./Martha's Vineyard) and sophomore
Riley Marion (Dartmouth, Mass./Dartmouth). Juniors
Natalie Lang (Garnet Valley, Pa./Garnet Valley) and
Emily Peters (Westminster, Md./Winters Mill) each contributed an assist.
Marion led the Bombers with five draw controls. Standera and Peters collected three ground balls apiece and senior
Anya Eckhardt (North Bennington, Vt./Mount Anthony Union) forced two turnovers.
Rookie
Emily Ross (Stony Brook, N.Y./Ward Melville) suffered the loss in goal in her collegiate debut. She made four saves.
