’Wick Women’s Lacrosse Team Topped By Buffalo State
ONEONTA, NY - Hartwick hung tough with Buffalo State in a non-conference women's lacrosse game at Wright Stadium on Friday, but the Bengals came away with a 17-11 victory over the Hawks. 'Wick stayed within three goals of the Bengals for the opening 21 miniutes of action before a late first-half rally gave them some cushion. The Hawks rattled off three straight goals and narrowed the gap to four twice in the saecond half but could get no closer.
The loss for the Hawks drops their record to 2-2. Buffalo State, playing in its season opener, improves to 1-0.
Junior captain
Emily Jweid (Marcy, NY/Whitesboro) was involved with five of the Hawks' 11 tallies. She finished the day with three goals and two assists. She also tied for a game-high with seven draw controls.
Freshman
Lauren Rosenberg (Smithtown, NY/Commack) added three goals and one helper for the Hawks. Sophomore
Kia Ference (Schenectady, NY/Schenectady) registered two goals and one assist,
Lisa Littleton (Yorktown, NY/Yorktown) netted two goals, and
Meagan Wright (Mahopac, NY/Mahopac) scored once.
The Bengals received a game-high five goals from Becca Martinez. Meghan Farrell added four scores and Niki Paulhardt contributed three tallies, one assist, and she equaled Jweid with seven draws.
Buffalo State got off to a quick start as it took a 2-0 lead inside of two minutes. The two teams would trade goals over the next nine minutes with Ference and Jweid getting the Hartwick goals and the Bengals led 4-2 after 10 minutes.
Jweid closed the gap to one with 13:47 left in the half but Farrell answered for Buff State 37 ticks later. Two Martinez goals and one from Littleton, all within 37 seconds, gave the visitors a 7-4 edge with 9:03 left.
The Bengals began to pull away as they netted four straight goals in a 3:05 span to go up in a 3:05 span to go up 11-4 with just 2:15 remaining before halftime. The Hawks got a lift heading into the break as Jweid scored twice in 15 seconds to make it 11-6 at half.
The Hawks continued the run as Rosenberg scored 29 seconds into the second half to make it a four-goal game. Paulhardt and Wright each scored for their respective teams, but Buffalo State again rallied for four consecutive goals in a 6:29 to take a 16-8 edge with under 11 minutes remaining.
The Hawks wouldnt go quietly as Ference scored at 9:34 and Rosenberg netted goals at 8:01 and 6:50 to make the deficit five. Alexis Wilensky would put an end to the run, however, and close out the game's scoring for Buffalo State with 3:20 showing on the clock.
Buffalo State edged the Hawks in shots, 32-28. 'Wick would hold the edge in the second half by a count of 17-13.
Hartwick keeper
Steph Luce (Saratoga Springs, NY/Saratoga Springs) made nine saves. Bengal goalies Colleen George and Brooklyn Schilling combined for 11 stops.
Hartwick was scheduled to play at New Paltz on Saturday, March 8 but that game has been postponed. It has been rescheduled for Saturday, March 15 at Hartwick's Wright Stadium at 1 p.m. The Hawks next play on Tuesday at Misericordia.
