Elmira and Stevens Fall in OT

Despite forcing an overtime period, the Elmira College women's lacrosse team (1-1) fell 14-13 to Morrisville State College (1-1) today.
Moorea Spoljaric '16 led the Soaring Eagles in today's game with four goals, three ground balls, two draw controls, one assist.
Also finishing the day with a well-rounded performances was
Rebecca Matturro '14 and
Jessica Blinkinsop '14. Matturro picked up five ground balls, won four draw controls, netted three goals, and a caused one turnover while Blinkinsop finished the day with two goals, two assists, two draw controls, and one ground ball.
EC found the scoreboard first, just 1:57 into the game, when Matturro received a pass from Blinkinsop and put the ball in the back of the net. The Mustangs of Morrisville responded with two straight goals to take the 2-1 lead 2:58 into the first half. The Purple and Gold tied the game back up 4:28 later when Spoljaric slipped the ball past the Mustangs netminder. The Mustangs retook the lead 1:58 later, but Elmira tied the game up with 15:15 left in the half after
Kelsey Quail '17 scored her third goal of the season, unassisted. Just three minutes later Spoljaric tallied her second goal of the game to give EC the 4-3 lead. The Mustangs responded with tying the game up 10 seconds later. Spoljaric netted her third goal of the game with 6:30 left in the half while Blinkinsop upped EC's lead to 7-4 after netting back-to-back unassissted goals one minute apart. Morrisville scored one more time with a minute left to trail Elmira, 5-7.
Matturro tallied her second goal of the day 1:06 seconds into the second half with
Bridget Keefe '14 being credited with the assist on the play. The Mustangs scored their sixth goal of the game 6:02 into the half, but Matturro gave the Soaring Eagles their biggest lead of the game, 9-6, just 1:05 later. Morrisville responded with five straight goals to take an 11-9 lead, with only 7:14 left in the second half. EC went right to work as Keefe netted a goal 19 seconds later off a pass from Blinkinsop and took advantage of a man-up advantage when Spoljaric tossed the ball to Sam Risi '14 who tied the game up at 11-11 with 11:30 left in the second half. However, less than a minute later Morrisville took a 12-11 lead that would hold until Spoljaric tied the game up at 12-12 with 43 seconds left in the half. As the time expired in regulation play, both teams would head into an overtime period.
The Mustangs scored the first two goals of the overtime period to take a 14-12 lead with 3:56 left. As EC went in desperation mode, Keefe scored her second goal of the game off a man-up opportunity with 18 seconds left. The Soaring Eagles ran out of time to complete the comeback win.
LeAnna Presler '14 stopped eight shots in her first loss of the season.
Claremont-Mudd Scripps 11, Stevens 10

Kara Rafferty and junior
Caitlyn Hughes each scored three goals, but the Stevens Institute of Technology women's lacrosse team suffered an 11-10 double overtime loss at Claremont-Mudd-Scripps Sunday afternoon.
Claremont improves to 3-3 with the win, while the Ducks drop to 2-3 overall.
After Rafferty scored the game's first goal 2:55 in, Claremont ran off six-straight scores to open a 6-1 margin with 9:33 left in the first half. Hughes' first halted the run at five, but the Athenas quickly answered to regain a five-goal cushion with 6:13 remaining in the opening period.
From that point, the Ducks went on a game-changing run, outscoring CMS 6-1 over the final 33:27 of regulation time to send the game into overtime. Freshman
Kathleen Kalbian started the run with an unassisted marker, and freshman
Laura Roberts sent the Ducks into the intermission with the momentum and just a 7-4 deficit. Rafferty assisted on the Roberts goal with 53 ticks left in the first half.
Hughes started the second-half scoring with a gorgeous goal thanks to a pretty feed from sophomore
Jaimie Mastrogiacomo, and following an Athena tally, two-straight Rafferty goals just 2:05 apart brought the Ducks within one goal (8-7) with 15:43 to play in the second. The second was assisted by sophomore
Erika Wilcox.
Just 1:24 later, Mastrogiacomo put away a feed from Wilcox to tie the game at eight, erasing what was a five-goal deficit. From that point, the two defenses flexed their respective muscles, and the game was played without a tally for the final 14:19 of regulation.
In the first OT, the Ducks scored two goals, one with 3:12 left in the period and another with 1:12 on the clock to open a 10-8 lead. Hughes and Wilcox each recorded unassisted tallies – Hughes on a free-position attempt and Wilcox thanks to a nice 1-v-1 move that created a clean look from the left side.
CMS was able to rally, getting two goals in the final 47 seconds to send the game into a second overtime period. Sophomore Izzy Laterzo and sophomoreChristina Coffin were responsible for the scores. Coffin's goal came via a free-position attempt with just seven seconds showing on the clock..
The second OT changes to a "Golden Goal" format, and the Athenas were able to strike first behind an unassisted goal from Coffin 1:12 into the second overtime. Stevens won the opening draw and was looking to get the ball into the attacking side before a whistle for a questionable infraction gave the hosts the possession and they never gave it back.
Rafferty led Stevens with four points on three goals and one assist, also corralling a team-high five draw controls. Hughes had three goals, and Mastrogiacomo notched a goal and an assist. Senior goalie
Sarah Prall had six saves and six ground balls, with Kalbian getting a goal, three ground balls, two caused turnovers and one draw control. Wilcox had three points thanks to a goal and two assists, also recording two draw controls, a caused turnover and ground ball. Junior
Amanda Ingersoll had three ground balls, one draw control and one ground ball.
Laterzo had three goals and an assist to lead CMS.
Stevens ended with a 30-23 margin in shots and a 22-17 edge in shots on goal. Stevens finished with a 20-19 advantage in ground balls, and also won 13-of-24 total draw controls.
