Ithaca Outlasts Union; Elmira Falls to Fredonia
Ithaca 12, Union 11
The 15th-ranked Ithaca College women's lacrosse team (4-4) evened its record by defeating host Union (4-3), 12-11, Tuesday afternoon at Frank Bailey Field.
The first half was thrice deadlocked, but Union used a three-goal streak for a 5-4 lead at intermission. Ithaca looked to secure the game early in the second with a 6-1 run, but Union surged to score four consecutive and tie the game at 10. The teams exchanged scores before sophomore
Ally Runyon sealed the victory for the Bombers.
Ithaca narrowly outshot Union, 27-26, while the Dutchwomen held a 16-14 advantage in ground balls. The hosts dominated draw controls, 17-8, though committed 12 turnovers to Ithaca's eight.
Runyon and junior
Niki Standera each recorded hat tricks, while junior
Emily Peters and sophomore
Riley Marion added two apiece.
Freshman
Emily Ross got the win in goal making eight stops. She had a team-best three ground balls.
Runyon and Marion each won two draws. Senior
Katie Long forced a pair of turnovers.
Union netted the game's first before Standera used a
Natalie Lang feed to even the game at 27:01. Standera struck again at 20:30, but the Dutchwomen won the ensuing draw and drove down field for a 2-2 game. Peters scored off a
Molly Fischer pass, but Union rattled off three straight for a 5-3 gap at the eight-minute mark. Sophomore
Riley Marion made it a one-goal game, 5-4, at 6:39 – a score that would stand through the half.
Ithaca recorded six of the first seven goals in the second. Fischer went unassisted to tip-off second-half scoring, but Union answered to keep a one-goal game. Marion scored the first of five straight for the Bombers. Senior
Becky Guzzo fed Runyon and then found Peters at the 21-minute mark. Freshman
Morgan Cadwell tallied moments later after junior
Laura Scalzi won the draw. Standera netted a free-position goal at 18:00 for 10-6 cushion, but the Dutchwomen responded to knot the game at 10-10 with four scores in less than three minutes. Runyon capitalized on the resulting draw and scored, but Union wasted little time before tying the game for the seventh time at 9:00. An Ithaca timeout led to the game-winner by Runyon at 4:31.
Fredonia 15, Elmira 8
The Elmira College women's lacrosse team (4-6) fell to Fredonia State (7-2), 15-8, on the road today.
Moorea Spoljaric '16 led the Soaring Eagles with two goals, an assist, and won two draw controls.
Fredonia started the game with two goals in the first eight minutes of play. Spolaric scored her first goal of the game off a free position attempt, 8:36 into the half. Unfortunately for the Purple and Gold, Spoljaric's goal would be EC's only goal in the first 16:24 of the half as the Blue Devils scored five straight to lead the Soaring Eagles, 7-1. The EC women scored two more goals before the end of the half with free position goal by
Ashton Hogan '15 and an unassisted goal by
Marissa Mongillo '15.
The Blue Devils scored the first five goals of the second half to lead the Purple and Gold, 12-3. Spoljaric scored an unassisted goal five minutes into the second half. Hogan won the next draw control and sprinted down the field and scored another goal just 27 seconds later to trail the Blue Devils, 5-12. Fredonia upped their lead to 13-5 after putting the ball in the back on the net with 9:48 remaining in the second half.
Sami Risi '14 scored a goal of her own off a free position attempt just 57 seconds later to trail the Blue Devils, 6-13. Frredonia responded back with 6:10 left in the second half to own a 14-6 lead.
Rebecca Matturro '14 received a pass from
Jessica Blinkinsop '14 to up EC's goal total to seven with 5:44 left in regulation time. With 3:12 remaining in the second half, Fredonia upped their score to 15-7, but EC would get the last goal of the gam,e just 22 seconds later, when Spoljaric tossed the ball to Blinkinsop who slipped the ball behind the Blue Devils' netminder.
