Cardinals and Golden Flyers Soar to Victory
ST. JOHN FISHER 7, Elmira 2
The St. John Fisher College men's tennis team improved to 2-2 in the Empire 8 Conference, as the Cardinals earned a 7-2 win over host Elmira College on Sunday.
Fisher won all three doubles matches to take the early lead.
Pat McGrath and
Sheldon Mitchell won 8-4 at first doubles, while
Nathaniel Ligon and
Jacob Zarzycki earned an 8-6 win at second doubles.
Adam Moran and
Daniel Tedesco won 8-3 at third doubles.
McGrath rallied for a 4-6, 6-2, 7-6(3) win at first singles, while Tedesco also battled back to win sixth singles 4-6, 6-1, 12-10.
Ligon (third singles) and Zarzycki (fourth singles) also earned points for the Cardinals.
NAZARETH 9, Hartwick 0
Visiting Nazareth made short work of Hartwick Sunday in an Empire 8 Conference men's tennis match as the Golden Flyers swept all nine matches for a 9-0 victory.
Nazareth improved to 3-10 overall and 3-3 in the E8. Hartwick is 0-9 overall and 0-4 in conference matches.
The closest match was at second doubles, where
Christian Bryant and
Scott Trobert edged Hartwick's tandem of Liam Brown and Jefferson Monastoque 9-7. Nazareth's first doubles team of Eik Manske and
Tyler Williams also won 8-3 and the third doubles pairing of
Matt Jennings and
Brian Rosiek won 8-1.
In singles action, Willilam, Manske, Rosiek,
Nick Lord, Bryant and Jennings each won in straight sets.
UTICA 5, Sage 4
The Utica College men's tennis team collected its first win of the spring season Sunday as it edged the Sage College's, 5-4, on the road at the Sage Tennis Courts.
Senior
Daniel Fadden (Lakeland, NY/Bishop Ludden) and sophomore
Raphael Warnon (Rock Tavern, NY/Washingtonville ) led UC with three points in the win as the duo won both of their singles matches and also posted a victory in doubles play. Sophomore
Matt Rogers (East Syracuse, NY/Bishop Ludden) also won his singles match and was partnered with Warnon in doubles.
TCNJ 8, Ithaca 1
The Ithaca College men's tennis team played a nonconference dual match against regionally-ranked The College of New Jersey and fell 8-1 Saturday at TCNJ. The Lions are ranked 19th in the Northeast Region by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association. Ithaca returns to action Wednesday at home against Elmira. The Bombers are 6-6 this season in dual matches.
Ithaca's point in the dual came at third singles, where
David Andersen was a winner in three sets. He won by scores of 1-6, 6-2, 10-6.
Skidmore 5, Stevens 4
The Stevens Institute of Technology men's tennis team won the top three singles matches on Sunday, but dropped the overall match to No. 26 Skidmore College 5-4.
The loss evened the Ducks record at 9-9, while Skidmore moved to 8-6.
Stevens started the match off well with an 8-3 win at third doubles for sophomores
Ben Foran and
Tyler Tisdale over sophomore Jonah Epstein and senior Gabe Steerman. Skidmore bounced-back with an 8-5 win at No. 1 for seniors Jimmy Sherpa and Oliver Loutsenko, before taking the doubles edge with a tiebreaker win in the second for sophomore Nick Tong and junior Alec Hoblitzell over the freshman duo of
Charles Drake and
Michael Feldman.
Heinrich tied the match for Stevens with a 6-2, 6-1 win over Sherpa at No. 1 to start the singles matches, but Skidmore came right back with a win at No. 6 for Epstein over freshman
Brett Derrington, 6-3, 6-2. Skidmore extended the lead with a 6-1, 6-3 win at No. 5 before Stevens mounted a furious comeback.
Needing a win, Foran got the job done with a 6-4, 6-3 win at No. 2 over junior Miles Ransom to cut the Ducks deficit to 4-3. Feldman followed-suit with a win at No. 3 in which he won the second set in a tiebreaker, setting up a winner take-all scenario at fourth singles.
Drake dropped the first set 6-4 to Steerman before coming-back from a 5-3 deficit in the second to win 7-5. With the match tied, Drake made-up at 3-0 deficit to make the match 3-2, but Steerman rallied to finish off the 6-2 win to clinch the match for Skidmore.
