SELINSGROVE, Pa. – Susquehanna senior men’s golfer Stephen Welkie leads the Glenmaura National College Invitational after round one while the Crusaders stand fifth overall as a team at the two-day tournament. The University of Scranton shot a 313 to move into third place after the opening round.
The two-time defending champion Royals are six strokes behind McDaniel College (307). York College of Pennsylvania is second at 312, followed by Scranton, Swarthmore College (314), Susquehanna University (316), Gettysburg College (318), Marywood University (327), King’s College (330), Moravian College (331), Muhlenberg College (346), Misericordia University (364), and Wilkes University (366).
Welkie shot a 73 on day one to stand alone at the top of the leaderboard on the par 71 course. Scranton senior Charles Hudacek and sophomore Ryan Brown shot 74 and 78, respectively.
Daniel Wilson stands tied for 19
th after the first round after shooting an 80 along with Royals junior Erik Meyer and Moravian's Dan Leppert.
Susquehanna's Kevin Phelan is tied for 23
rd with his score of 81 with Anthony Canarie just one shot behind (82). Dylan Gladd shot an 89 on the day.
The Royals also received an 81 from senior Grant Gulick, and an 82 from sophomore Erik Montella.
Moravian's Jim Maru finished the first day with an 81 followed by Evan Dickinson (84), Eric Shultz (86) and Dan Loughlin (99).
