Wester Sets Cardinal Record

ST. JOHN FISHER 18, Elmira 9
The St. John Fisher College men's lacrosse team used a 14-1 run over a span of three quarters to defeat host Elmira College 18-9 on Wednesday in an Empire 8 Conference matchup.

With the win, Fisher improves to 8-4 overall and 4-1 in the Empire 8, while the Soaring Eagles fall to 2-9, 1-4.

Senior Jeff Wester set the Fisher record for assists in game with eight and tallied nine points (one shy of the College's single-game point mark).  The senior broke the old mark of seven, set in 2011 by Connor Henderson and in 2007 by Dave Malone.

Elmira scored the game's opening goal with 9:30 left in the first quarter and the lead would stick for most of the opening period.   Fisher tied the game with 2:45 left in the period and took the lead for good just 42 seconds later on back-to-back goals from Gary Bova.

The Cardinals scored four goals in a 4:39 span early in the second quarter to take a 6-1 lead and pushed its margin to six goals at 8-2 going into the locker room.

Fisher picked up right where it left off in the second half, scoring six straight goals in the opening 10 minutes of third quarter and never looked back.

Senior Taylor Muztafago tallied eight ground balls and caused three turnovers.  Classmate David Haseley added five ground balls and created two turnovers.  He also finished with three points on two goals and one assist, as did Bova.

Jerry Warner was 12-for-13 at faceoffs, while scooping up four ground balls.  He also registered one assist.

Kevin O'Donnell also chipped in with four ground balls and was 6-of-10 at the X.

Jamie Campagna earned the win in goal, tallying six saves in the opening 42 minutes.

STEVENS 13, Utica 4
The Stevens Institute of Technology men's lacrosse team picked up a 13-4 Empire 8 Conference victory at Utica College on Wednesday to even its record at 6-6 on the season. Stevens is now 3-1 in the Empire 8 with three conference games left on its schedule.

The Ducks held Utica (6-7, 2-3) scoreless through the first 30 minutes of play and surrendered Utica's first goal of the game with 7:32 left in the third quarter. Stevens led, 3-0, at the break and 6-2 after three quarters, and then exploded for seven goals in the final period to tally the nine-goal victory.

Sophomore Colin Sawula netted the lone goal of the first quarter with 9:26 remaining in the frame for his fifth score of the season.

Senior Charlie Cronin then put Stevens ahead, 2-0, just 37 seconds into the second stanza on an unassisted goal before classmate Sean Scrudato took a pass from junior Michael Maroon at the 12:57 mark of the second to close out the offense in the first half.

In the third quarter, junior JP Giroux staked the Ducks to a 4-0 edge off Maroon's second assist nearly four minutes in before the Pioneers finally beat sophomore goalie Austin Boyd midway through the period for their first goal of the contest. Sophomore Michael Serrante put Stevens back up by four goals with just over two minutes left for his 18th goal of the season. After another Utica goal with 26 seconds to go, Maroon beat the buzzer in the third to give the Ducks a 6-2 lead heading to the final 15 minutes of play.

Cronin took a feed from Scrudato 1:02 into the fourth to give the Ducks their largest lead of the game at that time and then sophomore Matt Ferentini put in a man-up score just 2:29 later off a pass from freshman Connor McKeon. Utica crept back to an 8-3 difference at the 10:12 mark, but Cronin posted back-to-back scores in a 30-second span to give Stevens a 10-3 hold on the game. The Pioneers final goal was man-up with 5:23 left before the Ducks put the tilt away with three goals in the final 4:22.

In goal, Boyd earned his first win of the season with seven saves in all 60 minutes between the pipes. Ferentini paced Stevens with five groundballs, while sophomore DJ Bonifacic forced a team-high four turnovers with three groundballs.

Sophomores Brett Incollingo and Jeff Wyckoff each won five faceoffs at the "X".

Stevens dominated the game in shots with a distinct 53-19 disparity and took over 10 in each quarter. The Ducks also benefitted from 30 Utica turnovers and were successful on 15-of-16 clears.

HARTWICK 22, Houghton 4

Cortland 12, Nazareth 9
Seventh-ranked Cortland held a pair of six-goal leads in the second half before host Nazareth rallied to trim its deficit to 11-9 midway through the fourth quarter. The Red Dragons went on to defeat the Golden Flyers 12-9 in the non-conference men's lacrosse game on Wednesday. Sophomore Troy Haefele tallied a game-high three goals.

After the Red Dragons took a pair of six-goal leads early in the third quarter on goals by Matt Savlov and Matt Rakoczy, freshman Nick Arnold, senior Brian Wright, and sophomore Troy Haefele scored for the Golden Flyers. Arnold bullied his way through the left side of the Cortland defense and got his shot off before being knocked down. Wright and Haefele each added unassisted goals. Junior Drew Simoneau had Nazareth's first goal of the quarter after winning the faceoff following the Red Dragons' eighth goal of the game.

Following a Cortland goal by Hunter Osborne, senior Collin Clark answered with an unassisted goal less than four minutes into the fourth quarter to bring the Golden Flyers back within three goals. Clark's shot was from the left side of the goal. Fred Mase reclaimed Cortland's four-goal lead just over five minutes into the fourth.

Troy Haefele tallied a pair of goals to bring the Golden Flyers back to within 11-9. Haefele's second goal of the game followed a ground ball grabbed by Fanning. Fanning earned the assist. With 7:02 to play in regulation, Haefele notched his third goal of the game. Haefele's goal was assisted by Fallo on the man-up opportunity as he got the shot off from the low slot just before he was hit.

With 5:03 to play in the contest, Cortland's leading scorer with 21 goals, Zach Hopps, scored his first of the game to end the Nazareth scoring run and secure the Red Dragons' victory.

Rakoczy opened the scoring with an unassisted tally 5:15 into regulation, which was followed by a transition goal by Savlov in the final minute of the first. Cortland's Scott Tota made four saves in the opening quarter to keep Nazareth off the scoreboard.

Less than two minutes into the second stanza, sophomore Matt O'Neill put the Golden Flyers on the board with a man-up goal after he received a quick pass from junior Will Fallo. The man-up opportunity was set-up by a long pass by goalie Scott Brown, who spotted an open attackman on the clear. Instead of allowing the pass to be completed, the Cortland defender took a slashing penalty.

Eric Ohman stretched Cortland's lead to 3-1 after forcing a Nazareth turnover on its clear attempt. The Golden Flyers drew a three-minute man-up opportunity on Cortland's faceoff specialist Pat Baldwin. Fallo had a shot saved, then Nazareth took three penalties toward the end of the man-up chance, which prevented the Golden Flyers from taking advantage of Baldwin's penalty.

In the last four minutes of the half, Mike Cummings, Conor Scavone, and Mike Cantelli combined for four goals to extend Cortland's lead to 7-1. The shots from Cummings and Cantelli, on his first goal, were initially saved, but the ball trickled over the goal line behind Brown. Cantelli's second goal was scored with six seconds to play in the half. Despite having only six seconds left in the period, Simoneau won the ensuing faceoff and passed to classmate Kyle Fanning who buried a shot inside the Cortland post. Fanning's goal was with 1.8 to play in the period.

Brown played the first half in the Nazareth net and recorded six saves and allowed seven goals. In the second half, freshman Michael Cuciti maded five saves and allowed five goals. Cortland's defense entered the contest allowing less than seven goals per game with Tota recording a 6.76 goals against average and .590 save percentage. Tota had 13 saves against the Golden Flyers.

The Red Dragons finished with a 37-35 edge in total shots, while Nazareth had a 32-31 edge in ground balls collected and 15-8 in faceoffs won.
