Hawks Earn First Victory; Bombers Sweep Soaring Eagles; Cardinals Defeat Highlanders

The Sage Colleges Gators were no match for a Hartwick men's tennis team determined to earn its first victory of the season on Wednesday at Hartwick Courts in Oneonta. The Hawks were dominant as they swept all nine matches for a 9-0 win over the visitors.
The victory improves 'Wick's record to 1-9 on the year. The Gators fall to 0-12.
Jefferson Monastoque (Heredia, Costa Rica/Blue Valley) was flawless in both his singles and doubles match as he managed to win all 20 games he participated in. In doubles, he and partner
Liam Brown (Suffield, CT/Sufield) swept Robert Scott and Sean Alvarado, 8-0. Monastoque followed it up at fifth singles sweeping Mark Castillo, 6-0, 6-0.
Brian Redder (Marion, NY/Williamson) and
Will Gilbraith (West Monroe, NY/Paul V. Moore) only dropped two games on the day for the Hawks. The duo combined for an 8-1 win at first doubles over Sage's Gerard Beaudin and Cory Alvarado. Redder then took down Beaudin in first singles for his first win of the season, 6-0, 6-1. In the second flight, Gilbraith won by the same 6-0, 6-1 count over Cory Alvarado.
Sean Coppola (Canastota, NY/Canastota) and
Matt Behn (Windsor, NY/Windsor Central) registered their first doubles victory of the season in the third flight. They defeated Castillo and Khademe Osbourne, 8-0.
Coppola and
Ross Braue (Canastota, NY/Canastota) each won for the first time in singles play at fourth and sixth singles, respectively. Coppola toppled Sean Alvarado, 6-1, 7-5. Braue beat Alex Fernandez, 6-1, 6-0, which also marked his first career singles triumph as a Hawk.
Brown claimed his second singles win of the season in the third flight. He bested Scott, 6-4, 6-1.
ITHACA 9, Elmira 0
The Ithaca College men's tennis team returned to the win column with a 9-0 victory over visiting Elmira College in a dual match Wednesday afternoon at Glazer Arena. Ithaca moved to 7-6 overall and 5-1 in the Empire 8 with the victory. Elmira stands at 5-7 overall and 2-4 in the E8.
Ithaca ran through the doubles matches to build a 3-0 lead.
Joey Hanf and
Alex Krugman won 8-3 at third doubles to start things, followed by
David Andersen and
Wes Davis with an 8-4 win at first doubles.
Chris Hayes and
Griffin Reid wrapped up the doubles sweep with an 8-3 win in the second spot.
All but one of the singles matches were decided in straight sets. Hanf and Davis were the first two matches off the courts and clinched the team victory.
Chris Hayes won 6-3, 7-5 at third and
Griffin Reid pulled out a 3-6, 6-2, 10-6 comeback victory at first singles.
Nate Wolf and Kyle Van Delden wrapped up the shutout victory.
ST. JOHN FISHER 8, Houghton 1
The St. John Fisher College men's tennis team moved to 6-8 on the season after rallying past Houghton College, 8-1, on Wednesday.
Fisher's only loss of the match came at No. 1 doubles with Fisher winning all six singles matches.
Pat McGrath earned a win at No. 1 singles, 6-3, 6-4, while
Sheldon Mitchell earned a win in the second singles slot.
Nathaniel Ligon continued his strong play, winning at No. 3 singles and
Jacob Zarzycki posted a win at No. 4 singles.
Adam Moran and
Kyle Stich also earned points for Fisher with wins at No. 5 and No. 6 singles, respectively.
Fisher also earned a pair of points in doubles competition as Ligon and Zarzycki took the No. 2 doubles match and Moran and
Daniel Tedesco teamed up for a win at No. 3 doubles.
