In what may have been the final match of his career, senior Grant Gulick (Binghamton, NY/Johnson City)shot a two-under-par 69 today to lead The University of Scranton men’s golf team to a record-breaking performance against Marywood University and Baptist Bible College at Stone Hedge Golf Club.

The Royals finished with a school-record total of 287, eclipsing the previous low of 289 against Marywood University on September 21, 2012, at the Scranton Municipal Golf Course in Mt. Cobb.

Marywood and Baptist Bible shot 323 and 352, respectively.

The Royals also received an even-par 71 from sophomore Eric Montella (Waverly, Pa./Abington Heights), a 73 from sophomore Ryan Brown (Scranton, Pa./Scranton Preparatory), a 74 from junior Erik Meyer (Clarks Summit, Pa./Abington Heights), a 75 from senior Charles Hudacek (Moosic, Pa./Scranton Preparatory), and a 78 from freshmanKevin Nardella (Spring Brook Township, Pa./North Pocono).

With today’s wins, Scranton improves to 13-1.  Tomorrow’s season-ending match against Marywood University at Glenmaura National Golf Club in Moosic has already been cancelled due to the inclement weather forecasted for much of the area.

Marywood, which shot 323, was led by freshman Michael Thomas (Scott Township, Pa./Lakeland) and sophomore John Lawless (Dunmore, Pa./Scranton Preparatory) with 75 and 79, respectively, and junior Willis Davenport (Kingston, NY/Kingston) and sophomore Shane Davis (Glenside, Pa./Bishop McDevitt) rounded out the Pacers’ total with 81 and 88, respectively.

Freshman Luke Peterson (Clarks Summit, Pa./Abington Heights) led the Defenders with a 76 and sophomore Drew Burtis (Endwell, NY/Faith Heritage) was next with an 89.  Baptist Bible, which shot 352, also received a 93 from sophomore Spencer Fountain (York, Maine) and a 94 from freshman Dan Dodd (Vestal, NY/Central Baptist Christian).

Gulick’s 69 was one stroke off of tying his career-low round of 68, which he shot on September 1, 2013, in winning the Utica Fall Invitational individual champion at the Skenondoa Golf Club, Canton, New York, leading the Royals to their fourth straight title.  Today’s 69 was also his third sub-70 round of his career.

Montella's 71 eclipsed his previous low of 74, which he shot in the opening and final rounds of this year's 72-hole Empire 8 Conference championships, where the Royals finished runner-up for the second straight season.
