Hawks Take Down Utica for First E8 Win

UTICA, NY – Hartwick dropped just one match in a resounding 8-1 victory over Utica College on Thursday in Empire 8 men's tennis action. The victory is the second of the season for the Hawks and their first in Empire 8 Conference play.
           
The Hawks forged ahead in doubles as they swept all three matches with relative ease. Will Gilbraith (West Monroe, NY/Paul V. Moore) and Brian Redder (Marion, NY/Williamson) won their second match of the season at first doubles with an 8-3 win over Raphael Warnon and Daniel Fadden.
           
Liam Brown (Suffield, CT/Suffield) and Jefferson Monastoque (Heredia, Costa Rica/Blue Valley) secured their third victory at second doubles with an 8-4 triumph over UC's Matt Rogers and Ryan Valle.
           
At third doubles, Sean Coppola (Canastota, NY/Canastota) and Matt Behn (Windsor, NY/Windsor Central) improved to 2-2. The duo downed the Pioneer pair of Mike Slowokowski and Chris Santiago, 8-3.
           
Four Hawks cruised in straight sets in singles play. Redder won 6-0, 6-3 over Warnon in the first flight. Gilbraith beat Fadden 6-2, 6-3 at second singles. Coppola got win number two in the fourth slot with a 6-2, 6-2 victory over Valle and Ross Braue (Canastota, NY/Canastota) took out Santiago, 6-1, 6-2 at sixth singles.
           
Monastoque went the distance in the fifth flight against Slowokowski. He dropped the first set in a tie-breaker, 7-6, before returning the favor, 7-6, in the second to even the match. The third set was no different as Monastoque won 7-6 yet again to claim his team-best fourth win of the season.
           
Hartwick will be in action this weekend with a home match against St. John Fisher on Saturday at 2 p.m.
