Rafferty Gets 200th Point; Ithaca Flawless in E8 Play

Senior attack
Kara Rafferty scored the 200th point of her career in what turned out to be a 10-point performance, and the Stevens Institute of Technology women's lacrosse team improved to 7-7 on the season with a 20-4 win over Houghton College at the De Baun Athletic Complex Thursday.
Rafferty's 10 points were a career-high as the Stevens veteran poured in seven goals and three assists, notching seven points in the first half and three in the second. Her 200th came with 10:17 left in the game, putting away a perfect feed from sophomore midfielder
Erika Wilcox who had seven points on the afternoon behind three goals and four helpers.
Ten different Ducks recorded points with Rafferty's 10 leading the way. The senior captain also added six draw controls to her line. Senior goalie
Sarah Prall – who along with Rafferty was honored at halftime as part of Senior Day – earned the win in goal for the Ducks making five denials and picking up three ground balls.
Wilcox added two ground balls, two draw controls and two caused turnovers to her line of seven points, while freshman midfielder
Kathleen Kalbian had two goals and four draw controls. Freshman defender
Madison Annitto tallied four ground balls and four caused turnovers, while rookie
Mariel Haubrich had one goal, two assists and two ground balls. Junior defender
Amanda Ingersoll had four ground balls and three caused turnovers, and junior attack
Andrea Dragoni pocketed one goal and one assist. Freshman midfielder
Caroline DeLuca had two goals for the Ducks.
Stevens finished the contest with a 34-11 margin in shots and only committed 13 total turnovers. The Ducks ended with a 22-17 margin in ground balls, and won 15-of-25 draws. The Ducks were a perfect 16-for-16 on clear attempts as well.
The Ducks took a 4-0 advantage 2:35 into the action and never looked back, eventually settling on a 17-2 halftime margin and cruising to the win.
ITHACA 15, Utica 0
The 16th-ranked Ithaca College women's lacrosse team (11-5, 7-0 Empire 8) shut out visiting Utica (9-5, 3-4 Empire 8) 15-0 Thursday afternoon in its regular-season finale. It is the third straight season that the Bombers have played to a flawless 7-0 record in Empire 8 action.
Ithaca jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the first five minutes of play and held a 10-0 gap at intermission. Five different Bombers accounted for the five second-half scores as Ithaca recorded its first shutout since a 20-0 victory over Alfred in 2012.
The Bombers outshot Utica 29-12, including an 18-5 edge in the first half. It edged the Pioneers 25-20 in ground balls and 10-7 in draws.
Sophomores
Riley Marion and
Ally Runyon powered the Bombers to victory with career-best performances. Marion posted five goals and two assists and Runyon netted five and added one dish. They both won a team-best three draws.
Senior
Becky Guzzo served up a career-high tying four assists on senior day. Junior
Molly Fischer scored a pair of goals and sophomore
Taylor Purvis had a career-best two assists. Junior
Ali Woller had one and one, while classmate
Natalie Lang and freshman
Gaby Berne recorded the Bombers' other two scores.
Ithaca had a season-best 15 caused turnovers forcing the Pioneers to fail 10-of-18 clear attempts. Marion had three and senior
Jenna Marchinetti and juniors
Delaney Gilson and
Laura Scalzi chipped in two each. Runyon and Marchinetti collected four ground balls each.
Freshman
Emily Ross tallied the win in goal making three saves in 25:40 between the pipes. Senior
Brittany Romano added five saves in the final 34:20 of the game.
ST. JOHN FISHER 16, Brockport 3
Lindsey Shoales scored five goals as the nationally-ranked St. John Fisher College women's lacrosse team made quick work of No. 19 College at Brockport, defeating the visiting Golden Eagles, 16-3. With the win, Fisher improves to 11-4, while Brockport falls to 10-5.
Samantha Barton scored what turned out to be the game-winning goal just over one minute into the game after beating a double team and firing a shot past Brockport's goalie. Fisher would make it 2-0 less than three minutes later as
Jordan Johnson found Shoales for the goal.
It would take the Golden Eagles more than half of the opening period to get on the board, scoring their first goal at 13:28, but that was all they would manage in the first frame as the Cardinals controlled the tempo for the remainder of the half.
Fisher scored four unanswered including two more from Shoales to hold a 7-1 lead as both teams broke for intermission.
Trailing by six goals at the start of the second stanza, Brockport scored its second goal of the game, but the Cardinals answered with five goals of their own to make it 12-2 before the Golden Eagles could net their third goal of the contest with just over 12 minutes left to play.
The goal would be Brockport's last, as Fisher would score the game's final four goals to earn the win.
Taylor Hughes added to her program-leading numbers, scoring two goals to go along with a pair of ground balls.
Erin Ward,
Bridget Alberts and
Danielle Falck each notched a goal, while Barton scored three goals and registered four draw controls.
Sierra Badger had two goals in the win and posted one ground ball, three draw controls and two caused turnovers.
Nicole Hart got the start in net for Fisher and made four saves to pick up her third win of the season.
Oswego 12, ELMIRA 9
The Elmira College women's lacrosse team (5-10, 2-4 E8) fell to Oswego State University (11-5) 12-9 today.
Ashton Hogan '15 led the Soaring Eagles with four goals, one assist, and won three draw controls in today's action.
The Lakers found the scoreboard first just 1:58 into the first half to take an early 1-0 lead. The Purple and Gold tied the game up just 3:36 later when
Moorea Spoljaric '16 netted her first goal of the game unassisted. 1:15 later, Spoljaric scored her second goal of the game after Hogan found her open in front of the net to take a 2-1 lead. 6:50 into the first half,
Bridget Keefe '14 tallied her first goal of the game after making a play in front of the net and tossed the ball past the Oswego's netminder to increase EC's lead to 3-1. Just 2:33 seconds later, Keefe found Hogan who scored her first goal of the game, giving Elmira their biggest lead of the game, 4-1. However, the Lakers regrouped and scored four straight goals over the next 9:15. Elmira broke their scoring drought right before halftime when Hogan found the back of the net for the second time. Spoljaric had the ball of the left side of the net and found Hogan cutting toward the net. Hogan ran across the face of the goaltender and fired the shot over the goalie's shoulder, tying the game up at five.
Spoljaric put the Soaring Eagles back in the lead just 2:28 into the second half when
Marissa Mongillo '15 tossed the ball over to Spoljaric, allowing her to score her third goal of the game. Oswego then scored four straight goals to take a 9-6 lead. With 19:23 left in the first half, Mongillo found Hogan in front of the net and promptly put the ball past the Lakers' goal keeper to trail Oswego, 9-7. The Lakers responded with three more goals to take a 12-7 lead with just 9:55 left in the second half. Elmira battled to the very end as Keefe scored off a free position attempt with 25 seconds left in the game and Hogan won the next faceoff and after getting fouled on her way to the net, she ran past the Oswego's defenders to score with just 13 seconds left in the game.
LeAnna Presler '14 stopped 13 shots today while
Lindsay Wargo '17 made one save in today's action.
