Elmira Picks up Two Wins on the Road against Houghton

The Elmira College softball team (15-13) continued their strong play this afternoon as the Soaring Eagles picked up a pair of wins against Houghton College (1-31).  With the wins, Elmira is now 7-1 in their last eight games.
 
Game One – Elmira, 5, Houghton 0
Elmira took an early lead in the first inning as Alex Puglisi '14 scored after reaching on an error.  The Soaring Eagles extended their lead to 2-0 in the second as a Jacquelyn Heggie '14 singled to left field, a hit that brought home Emily Carlin '14.
 
Puglisi would keep the Highlanders' bats quiet as Houghton continued to put zeros on the scoreboard, allowing Elmira's offense to tack on three two-out runs in the top of the seventh to take a commanding 5-0 lead.  Driving in runs for the Soaring Eagles was Katie Dore '15, who smashed a two-run home run, and Megan Anderson '15 who brought home another run on a two-out double.
 
The Purple and Gold would go on to win the first leg of the doubleheader, 5-0.  Puglisi finished game one with eight strikeouts, improving her overall record to 8-10 on the season. 
 
Game Two – Elmira 8, Houghton 1
The Highlanders opened the nightcap with a leadoff triple, followed by an RBI double, which gave Houghton a 1-0 lead in the first inning.  Houghton maintained their one run lead through the second inning before Elmira evened things at one apiece in the top of the third. 
 
Elmira blew things wide open in the fourth inning, scoring four runs to take a 5-1 lead before adding another two runs in the fifth on a two-run homer by Carlin.  Carlin's home run ups her season total to seven which includes four homers in Elmira's last five games.
 
The Soaring Eagles would score an insurance run in the sixth inning as Dore registered an RBI double, sealing an 8-1 win for Elmira. 
 
Emilie Rogers '14 earned her seventh win of the season as she struck out a season-high 12 batters in seven complete innings of work.  With the win, Rogers improves to 7-3 this season.
