UC Falls Short in Home-Opener to Oswego

Utica, NY (4-3-14) – The Utica College men's tennis team battled Thursday afternoon in its season-opener however fell short, 5-4, to non-conference rival Oswego State at the UC Tennis Courts. Freshman
Ignacio Mascolo (Rye, NY/Rye ) registered his first career victory in his collegiate debut as he downed Oswego's ace Ben Weiss, 7-5 and 7-5, in the No. 1 spot of singles play.
UC drops to 1-3 overall and is right back on the court Friday as they welcome Houghton College to the friendly confines of the UC Courts for a 4 p.m. set start. The Lakers even their overall mark at 3-3 with the victory and return to action Saturday when they travel to Keuka Park, NY to face the Storm (4 p.m.).
Utica won three out of five in singles competition as sophomore's
Raphael Warnon (Rock Tavern, NY/Washingtonville ) and
Matt Rogers (East Syracuse, NY/Bishop Ludden) recorded wins. Warnon won in three sets (6-4, 4-6, 6-3) while Rogers took Oswego's No. 4 down in two (6-1, 6-4). The duo teamed up for the Pioneers lone win in doubles play by a score of 8-3.
