Nationally-Ranked Cardinals Fall to Geneseo - Hughes Sets All-Time Assist Mark
BOX SCORE
In a game that lived up to its billing, the nationally-ranked St. John Fisher College women's lacrosse team battled ninth-ranked Geneseo at Growney Stadium on Thursday evening. The contest featured six ties and seven lead changes before the Knights were able to pull away late in the second half after pouring in four consecutive goals en route to an 11-8 win.
The No. 17 Cardinals (7-3) held the reigns briefly in the second half when
Lindsey Shoales staked Fisher to a one-goal lead, 7-6, after netting a pass from
Samantha Barton, but the Knights reclaimed the lead, scoring four unanswered goals to take a 10-7 advantage.
Barton brought the Cardinals to within two goals when the Rochester native notched her 21st goal of the season on a free position opportunity making it 10-8 in favor of the visiting team. With just over a minute left to play, the Cardinals had an extra-player opportunity after a Geneseo penalty, but were unable to close the gap, despite several good looks down the stretch. The Knights would tack one more goal in the game's final seconds to claim an 11-8 win.
Geneseo (7-1) got the night started, scoring the game's first goal at 26:31 before the Cardinals answered with two goals of their own to take a 2-1 lead.
Taylor Hughes found
Jordan Johnson at 14:22 to become Fisher's all-time leader in assists after notching her 83
rd career helper.
The Cardinals' lead would be short-lived, however, as the Knights notched three-straight goals over the next two minutes to hold a 4-2 advantage with 11:54 left to play in the opening frame.
Trailing by two goals, the Cardinals went to work, scoring three of the half's final four goals to even the score at five goals apiece as both teams headed to the sidelines for intermission.
Barton contributed four points on two goals and two assists. She also had four draw controls and caused one turnover. Hughes also tallied four points, three ground balls and a pair of draw controls, while Shoales, Johnson,
Emily Bryerton and
Kristina Lombard each netted a goal in the loss.
Caroline Trpcevski moves to 6-3 on the season after making four stops in goal.
The Cardinals will return to action at 1 p.m. on Saturday when they travel to Utica to take on the Utica College Pioneers in an Empire 8 matchup.
