ALFRED 12, Elmira 11
The Alfred University men's lacrosse team improved to 3-5 on the season with a 12-11 win over Elmira College, Saturday afternoon on the road. This win moves Alfred to 1-2 in Empire 8 play and drops Elmira to 0-3.
Senior midfielder
Brendan Sullivan netted two goals in the first quarter, and senior attack
Brett Carroll scored two goals in the second quarter to help AU to a 6-5 lead at halftime.
The Soaring Eagles outscored the Saxons 2-1 after three frames of play, bringing the score to 7-7 headed into the fourth quarter.
Alfred opened the fourth quarter with four straight goals, giving the Saxons an 11-8 lead, until Elmira answered with three back-to-back goals, tying the score at 11-11 with 3:30 minutes left to play. Carroll notched the game-winning goal inside three minutes, securing the AU win.
Carroll (five ground balls, three caused turnovers) and Sullivan both finished with five and four goals each. Sophomore midfielder

Jimmy Pratti went 14 of 26 on face-offs and earned eight ground balls. Senior defender
Pat Walsh scooped up six groundballs.

Cody O'Connor went the distance in net, making eight saves.
ST. JOHN FISHER 7, Stevens 5
The St. John Fisher College men's lacrosse team allowed just one goal over the game's final 49 minutes, as the Cardinals rallied from a 4-1 deficit to defeat visiting Stevens Institute of Technology 7-5 on Saturday at Fisher's Growney Stadium on Senior Day.
With the win, Fisher improves to 5-4 overall, but more importantly, 2-1 in the Empire 8 Conference. Stevens drops to 5-6, 2-1 with the loss.
The Ducks were in control early on. With the game tied at 1-1, Stevens scored three goals in a 1:34 span to take a 4-1 lead with four minutes left in the opening period.
Senior
David Haseley scored with 5:14 left in the second quarter to make it 4-2 and exactly one minute later
Tim Wagner made it a one-goal game off a pass from
Jeff Wester. Wagner then tied the game at 4-4 early on the second half with
Gary Bova assisting on the goal.
Fisher seized control late in the third. Senior
Greg Ramsden put Fisher up for good, with his 11
th goal of the season from
Brett Farrell with 3:45 left. Less than 30 seconds later Farrell scored off a pass from Haseley. Holding for the final shot of the quarter, Farrell scored with one second left one the clock off a feed from Wester to make it 7-4.
The Ducks scored with just over 10 minutes left in the fourth, but the Fisher defense, led by seniors
Jamie Campagna, Greg Bell and
Mike Blood didn't allowed them to get any closer.
Campagna finished with 15 saves to earn the win in goal. Bell led Fisher with a career-high four caused turnovers, while Blood scooped up two ground balls.
Paul Cefalu was a solid 7-for-13 on faceoffs.
NAZARETH 17, Hartwick 5
ITHACA 19, Houghton 0
The 11
th-ranked Ithaca College men's lacrosse team (8-3) posted its second shutout in program history defeating visiting Houghton (0-9) 19-0 Saturday afternoon at Higgins Stadium. Ithaca's first shutout came in the program's second season with an 18-0 victory against Alfred on May 7, 1968.
Ithaca powered to a 10-0 lead in the first quarter and added five in the second for a 15-0 advantage at intermission. The Bombers did not score in the third, but tallied four in the fourth for their second-highest goal total of the season.
Ten Bombers recorded goals in the victory. Freshman
Sean Ferrito led the game with a season-best five points on four goals and an assist. Senior
Pat Slawta netted a hat trick, while classmate
Brandon Henne and freshmen
John Januszkiewicz,
Alex Sullivan and
Grant Osadchey each tallied twice. Sophomore
Michael Walker and freshmen
Justin Bird,
Forrest Rall and
Harry Schoenhautaccounted for the other four scores.
Joining Ferrito with five points, senior
Joe Perkins posted a career-best performance of five assists. Junior
James Manilla dished out three and Januszkiewicz, Sullivan, Rall, Osadchey, senior
Ryan Burns and freshman
Austin Smith each had one.
Five players won faceoffs for Ithaca. Junior
Matt Greenblatt had six victories, Henne and Osadchey five apiece, Rall three and junior
Steve Danylyshyn went 1-for-1. Rall had a season- and game-best 10 ground balls. Henne chipped in seven and Greenblatt and Osadchey six.
Defensively, freshman
Cody Swing forced a season- and game-best six turnovers. Sophomore
Scott Sidnam earned the win in goal. Freshmen
Jack Deragon and
Justin Isaacs also saw time. The goalies were not forced to make a save in the shutout.
Ithaca outshot Houghton 56-4, held a 65-11 gap in ground balls and won 20 of 23 faceoffs. Two of Houghton's faceoff victories were results of Ithaca violations. The Highlanders had 25 turnovers to Ithaca's 14.
UTICA 10, Misericordia 7
The Utica College men's lacrosse team combined to outscore host Misericordia 8-3 between the second and third quarters on its way to a 10-7 victory in non-conference action Saturday afternoon. Three different Pioneers scored two goals including seniors
Joe Schoen and
Scott Baron, as well as sophomore
Trent Jacobs. Schoen also added an assist to help the Pioneers snap a three game slide as they improved to 5-5 overall on the season.
The Pioneers trailed 3-2 with 3:41 to go in the first half before exploding with seven of the game's next eight goals to gain a convincing 9-4 advantage with 8:56 to go in the fourth quarter.
Misericordia (4-6) scored three goals in the final 8:22 of the contest to put a scare into the Pioneers, but the comeback bid proved to be too late as UC came away with the 10-7 victory in regulation.
With the score knotted at 3-3 late in the second quarter, Baron netted his second goal of the day with just eight ticks left on the first half clock to give the Pioneers a 4-3 lead at the half. Utica faceoff man
Zack Stevenson gave UC a two goal lead, 5-3, when he scored just 45 seconds into the second half and then the Pioneers rattled off three straight man-up goals in a span of 3:13 in the third quarter to push their lead to 8-4.
Freshman
Ross Cree netted one goal and added one assist for the Pioneers, while
Liam Wheatley added the Pioneers final goal of the game, his second of the season, midway through the fourth quarter to seal the victory.
Stevenson and long stick defender
Tom Byrne each scooped up a game-high seven ground balls, while senior goalie
Andrew DiOrio stopped 12 shots in the victory for Utica.
Corey Thompson also chipped in with four ground balls for the visitors as the Pioneers earned a 36-27 advantage in the ground ball category. UC outshot the Cougars 43-32 to spoil senior day at Mangelsdorf Field.
Junior
Christian Reiller netted one goal for Utica and remains in the team lead with 26 points this season (17 goals, nine assists). Senior
Joe Schoen now has 63 career assists and needs just two more to tie his older brother Steve Schoen '07 for second on the College's all-time list.
