Elmira, Ithaca and Stevens Blank Opponents
ELMIRA 9, Utica 0 Box Score
The Elmira College men's tennis team picked up their second consecutive 9-0 Empire 8 Conference victory, defeating Utica College on Class of 2014 Recognition Day.
Sam Pine '14, EC's lone senior, was a double-winner this afternoon, securing victories at first singles and first doubles.
The Soaring Eagles were the beneficiaries of three defaults before the match even started as Utica only had four players available to play in today's contest. After the two doubles matches were over, EC had a 5-0 lead, giving the Purple and Gold their second conference win of the season.
There was a little bit of lineup movement for EC as both first and second doubles pairings were different than normal, but that did not seem to matter as both teams cruised to wins. Pine and doubles partner,
Satchal Waters '16, were the first to come off the court victorious after their 8-2 win at first doubles.
Austin Mansell '16 and
Pavle Vashakidze '16 were close behind with an identical 8-2 victory at second doubles.
Elmira experienced much of the same success in singles play as three out of the four singles matches on the court saw no more than four games won by Utica.
Pine, playing his first career match at first singles, rolled to a 6-0, 6-2 win, giving him the perfect sweep on senior day. Pine was followed by
Scott Ferron '16, who came away with a 6-2, 6-1 victory at third singles. Mansell was the lone close match of the afternoon, but the sophomore still came away with a 6-3, 7-5 victory at second singles. Newcomer,
Neal Statts '17 closed out the match with his second career singles victory after securing the 6-3, 6-1 win at fourth singles.
