STEVENS 18, Alfred 6
The Stevens Institute of Technology women's lacrosse team remained perfect in the Empire 8 with an 18-6 rout of Alfred University on a windy Saturday afternoon at the De Baun Athletic Complex.
 
After Alfred scored the game's first goal 1:41 in, the Ducks grabbed a stranglehold of the action and never let go, cruising to the 18-6 win. Senior midfielder Kara Rafferty put the Ducks on the scoreboard at 26:51, igniting what turned out to be a 13-0 run over a span of 20:09 in the first half. Freshman midfielder Kathleen Kalbian, sophomore midfielder Erika Wilcox, junior attack Andrea Dragoni, freshman midfielder Caroline DeLuca and sophomore attack Mackenzie Swartout all scored goals in the run as the Ducks ended up taking a 13-2 lead into the intermission.
 
Alfred opened the second-half scoring 18 seconds in, and Rafferty and Wilcox quickly answered for the Ducks. Another Saxon goal was followed by a pair for the Ducks from DeLuca and Swartout with freshman midfielder Jess Leiby closing the Stevens scoring with the first goal of her career.
 
Freshman Janelle Welkie, senior Sarah Prall and freshman Julia Loria combined to make six saves in goal for Stevens with Welkie earning the win.
 
Stevens ended with a 40-14 edge in shots, putting 31 on goal. The Ducks held a 24-17 margin in ground balls and a 19-6 advantage in draw controls.
 
Wilcox led the Stevens offense with five goals, three assists, four ground balls, three caused turnovers and a draw control. Junior Amanda Ingersoll paced a stingy Duck defense, scooping up five ground balls and causing four turnovers. Rafferty finished with three goals, one assist and three draw controls, with Kalbian getting two goals, one assist, 10 draw controls and four ground balls. Freshman Betsy Crossland had two ground balls and two caused turnovers, while Dragoni had two goals. Swartout had a nice game for Stevens, tallying three goals and an assist, as did DeLuca who notched four points on two goals and two helpers.
 
Junior goalie Taylor Tarajos led Alfred with 13 saves.


ITHACA 11, Utica 5
The St. John Fisher College women's lacrosse team scored six straight goals, including the first five of the second half, as the Cardinals surged past host Utica College for an 11-5 win on Saturday. 

With the win, Fisher improves to 8-3 overall and 3-1 in the Empire 8 Conference, while Utica falls to 5-3, 1-2.

For the third straight game, Fisher's Taylor Hughes set an all-time record. The senior tallied three goals, bringing her career total to 193, setting a new Fisher record for goals in a career.   One week ago today, Hughes became Fisher's all-time leader in points and on Thursday, she set a new record for career assists.   Hughes has 279 points on 193 goals and 86 assists over her four-year career.

Fisher took the lead for good in the closing moments of the first half, as Erin Ward scored with 35 seconds left to give the Cardinals a 5-4 lead at the break.
Fisher gained control early in the second half, scoring four goals in the opening 6:30 of the second period to pull away.

Samantha Barton and Hughes led the way for Fisher, tallying five points apiece.  Barton registered four goals and one assist, while Hughes finished with three goals, two assists and four ground balls.
Emily Bryerton added two goals, while Sierra Badger also scored in the win.   Jordan Johnson and Lindsey Shoales each recorded one assist.

Freshman Abbie Reed led Fisher with five ground balls, while Logan Barnard and Jill Zerrillo each scooped up three.

Caroline Trpcevski stopped five shots in net to earn the win.


NAZARETH 10, Hartwick 5
The Golden Flyers earned a 10 - 5 victory over the Hartwick Hawks Saturday afternoon in a women's home lacrosse match.
 
The victory improves Nazareth's record to 4-5 overall and 1-1 in the conference. The loss drop Hartwick to 4-8 overall and 0-4 in the conference. Goals for the Golden Flyers came from junior Briana Mancini, senior Brooke Sullivan, senior Amy McIntosh, sophomore Carly Gates, freshman Emily Rothrock, Freshman Gabrielle Charles, and juniorSuzie Gray.

The first goal game came in the fourth minute of the first half. Nazareth's Mancini picked up a rebound and snuck the ball past the shoulder of Hartwick's Steph Luce. Within less than a minute, the Hawks fired back with a goal from Ali Sisco. Nazareth fought back and scored a second goal five minutes later when Emily Rothrock sailed a pass across the arc to teammate Brooke Sullivan who fired the ball to the back of the net.

The Golden Flyers continued to fight hard when Sullivan buried her second goal of the game from teammate Kelsey McNaboe. In the 18th minute the Hawks earned their second goal, and later equalized the game in the 20th minute when Lauren Rosenberg snuck the ball past the foot of Tara Prosak on a free position shot. Hartwick took their first lead of the game when Ali Sisco scored on a free position shot with seven minutes remaining in the half. Nazareth's McIntosh tied the game at four with an assist from McNaboe. The Golden Flyers closed the first half with a goal from Gates, assisted by Gray.

Nazareth began the second half when McNaboe scored her first goal of the game assisted by Emily Rothrock. About three minutes later Kate Rothrock scored, giving the Golden Flyers a three goal advantage over the Hawks. Nazareth kept their offensive intensity high when Charles drove to the goal and tucked the ball neatly in the top corner of the net. Hartwick fought back when Hartwick's Emily Jweid ran though Nazareth's defense and beat Prosak for the Hawks' fifth goal. Minutes later Nazareth's Gray scored on a free position shot increasing the score 9-5. Sullivan scored her fifth goal in the 58th minute, assisted by Gray. The Golden Flyers sealed their win, ending the game 10-5 over Hartwick.


ITHACA 19, Houghton 4
The 15th-ranked Ithaca College women's lacrosse team (5-4) upended visiting Houghton (3-6), 19-4, Saturday afternoon at Higgins Stadium to win its fourth straight.
 
The Bombers owned a 9-1 gap at the half after opening action with a 7-0 run. Ithaca improved its lead to 15-1 in the second. The Highlanders netted back-to-back scores before Ithaca added four more. Houghton rounded out all scoring with 31 seconds lingering in the game, 19-4.
 
Ithaca led all shots, 40-13, ground balls 22-21 and draw controls 17-8. Houghton committed 22 turnovers and Ithaca had 19.
 
Eleven student-athletes netted scores for the Bombers. Sophomore Riley Marion and junior Molly Fischer recorded hat tricks with Marion adding an assist. Juniors Delaney GilsonNiki Standeraand Natalie Lang and rookie Morgan Racicot chipped in two each. Standera dished out two assists and Lang and Racicot one. Senior Becky Guzzo led the game with three assists and tallied one goal.
 
Freshman Gaby Berne scored her first collegiate goal and had one assist for the Bombers. Sophomores Mackenzie Robinson and Ally Lates and junior Ali Woller accounted for the Bombers' other three goals. Sophomore Taylor Purvis and senior Anya Eckhardt each had one assist.
 
Fischer had a game-best five draws, one shy of her career high. Seniors Jenna Marchinetti and Katie Long anchored the Bomber defense. Marchinetti had career-best numbers of four forced turnovers and five ground balls. Long had two caused turnovers and collected four ground balls.
 
Freshman Emily Ross recorded the win in goal for the Bombers having made three stops during the first half. Senior Brittany Romano relieved Ross for the second half to save three shots.
