Golden Flyers, Saxons and Bombers Secure Wins
Nazareth 6, Elmira 3 Box
MENDON, N.Y. -- Host Nazareth gained its first men's tennis victory of the season Sunday as the Golden Flyers won four of six singles contests on the way to a 6-3 victory over Elmira in Empire 8 Conference action.
Nazareth improved to 1-8 overall and 1-1 in conference play. Elmira is 4-5 overall and 1-2.
Key performers for Nazareth included sophomore
Scott Trobert and senior
Nick Lord, who each won three-set singles matches. Trobert rallied for a first-set setback to defeat Elmira's Sam Pine 2-6, 7-6, 6-3 at third singles. Lord lost the first set at fourth singles 6-7, before rallying to win 6-1, 7-5 over Elmira's Austin Mansell.
Senior
Erik Manske and freshman
Christian Bryant took straight-set singles wins at second and sixth singles respectively.
Nazareth also took two points in doubles. Manske and
Tyler Williams won 8-6 at first doubles, while
Matt Jennings and
Brian Rosiek combined to win 8-6 at third doubles.
Alfred 8, Hartwick 1
The Alfred University men's tennis team defeated host Hartwick College, 8-1, Sunday afternoon. With the win, the Saxons (9-6 overall) evened their Empire 8 Conference record at 1-1.
The Saxons took five of six singles matches. Sophomore
Connor Doud (Ballston Spa, NY/Ballston Spa) won first singles, 6-3, 6-2; senior
Peter Benoit (Gasport, NY/Barker) won second singles, 6-2, 7-5; junior
Michael Graham (Elmira, NY/Southside) won third singles, 6-0, 6-0; senior
Stefan Nonnenmann (New Providence, NJ/New Providence) won fourth singles, 6-0, 6-1; and sophomore
Matt Baloga (Goseh, NY/Goshen) won sixth singles, 6-3, 6-4.
AU swept three doubles matches. Doud and Nonnenmann won first doubles, 8-3; Benoit and Graham took second doubles, 8-1; and
Evan Haskins (East Amherst, NY/Williamsville South) and senior
Eric Teller (Granville, NY/Granville) claimed third doubles, 8-3.
Ithaca 8, St. John Fisher 1
The Ithaca College men's tennis team swept all six singles matches in an 8-1 win over St. John Fisher on Sunday afternoon at Mendon Racquet Club. Ithaca returns to action Tuesday at Nazareth. Ithaca evened its overall record at 5-5 on the year and stands 3-1 in Empire 8 play.
Ithaca led 2-1 after doubles play when
Wes Davis and
Joey Hanf won 8-1 at third doubles and the duo of
Chris Hayes and
Griffin Reid won 8-3 at second doubles.
In singles play, Ithaca won five of the six matches in straight sets. Hayes was a 6-2, 6-2 winner at fourth singles and was followed off court in order by Davis (6-4, 6-0) at third singles and Reid (6-4, 6-1) at second singles to give Ithaca the requisite five points for the dual-match victory. Zach Passman dropped his opening set 6-1, but won the next two by 6-1 and 6-2 scores to get the win. Ithaca extended its winning margin with wins by
Justin Levine at fifth singles and
Nate Wolf at sixth singles.
