Royals Shoot 2nd-Lowest Round In School History To Open Spring Season With Win Over Wilkes
DALLAS, Pa.—To say that The University of Scranton men’s golf team was a little eager to open its spring season Monday afternoon against Wilkes University at Huntsville Golf Club would be an understatement.
The Royals ignored the rainy and wet conditions and shot a four-score total of 291, which was only two strokes off of tying the record for the lowest round in school history. With today's win, Scranton improves to 7-0.
Junior
Erik Meyer (Clarks Summit, Pa./Abington Heights) captured medalist honors with a one-under-par 71. Scranton also received a career-low rounds of 72 from sophomore
Ryan Brown (Scranton, Pa./Scranton Preparatory), senior
Brandon Gano (Bridgewater, NJ/Bridgewater-Raritan), and a 76 from freshman
Kevin Nardella (Spring Brook Township, Pa./North Pocono).
Rounding out Scranton’s lineup were senior
Grant Gulick (Binghamton, NY/Johnson City) with a 77, freshman
Steven Lambrinakos (Stamford, Conn./Trinity Catholic) with an 81, and sophomore
Carmine Gerrity-Gemei (Ossining, NY/Iona Preparatory) with an 83.
Senior Matt Kachurak paced the Colonels with a 77 and was followed in the lineup by senior Mike Daubert (Thornhurst, Pa./Coughlin), junior Dalton Milan (Blakely, Pa./Valley View) and senior Darren Mensch (Muncy, Pa./Muncy) with an 81, 83, and 84, respectively. Junior Matt Williams (Taylor, Pa./Riverside) also competed today and fired an 87. The Colonels shot 325 as a team.
Brown’s previous career-low round was a 74 at the Utica Fall Invitational on September 2, 2012, at the Skenondoa Golf Club in Canton, New York, while Gano shattered his previous best of 78 against Marywood University on September 27, 2013, at the Scranton Municipal Golf Course in Mt. Cobb.
The record for the lowest round in Royals’ history was set on September 21, 2012, when the Scranton quartet of
Gulick (69),
Meyer (71),
Jamie Bresnhan (73) and
Justin Riley (76)/Charles Hudacek (76) shot 289 against Marywood University at the Scranton Municipal.
The Royals will return to action on Wednesday, April 9, against King’s College and Baptist Bible at Glenmaura National Golf Club in Moosic starting at 1:00 p.m.
