Accolades Continue for Cardinal Golfers
The Golf Coaches Association of America (GCAA) has announced five members of the nationally-ranked St. John Fisher College men's golf team have been named to the Division III Ping All-Region Team for the Mid-Atlantic Region following a remarkable season that culminated with a sixth-place finish at the 2014 NCAA Division III Men's Golf Championship last week in Greensboro, N.C.
Senior
Ryan McGinnis was named to the All-Region team after a strong 2013-14 campaign after averaging a score of 74.05 over the course of nine tournaments this year. McGinnis ranked third in the region in score versus par and was second only to
Thad Wier in birdies with 50. The Chittenango native fired the low-score at the Empire 8 Spring Championship and recorded five top-ten finishes.
Earning his third consecutive appearance on the All-Region team,
Chris Blyth ranked among the best in the Mid-Atlantic Region, ranking fourth with an average score of 74.33 in 21 rounds. The junior recently finished in 12th place at NCAAs after leading Fisher with a combined score of +7. Prior to that, Blyth secured six top-ten finishes this season after participating in 10 tournaments overall including a second-place finish at the ECAC Division III Mid-Atlantic Championship after shooting a season-best 69 in the opening round. His 49 birdies ranked third on the team.
Freshman
Hogan Cuny was named All-Region as the Cranberry Township, PA native ranked 25th overall in the region. He secured six top-ten finishes in 10 tournaments including a fourth-place finish at the Empire 8 Fall Championships where he shot a combined 151. Cuny had a strong showing at the national tournament as well, finishing in a tie for 40th place.
Joe Feeney earned his first appearance on the All-Region list after an average score of 73.71. The McQuaid graduate ranked second in the region according to Golfstat after five top-ten finishes this season in only seven tournaments. Like Blyth, Feeney's best performance of the year came at the ECAC Mid-Atlantic Championships as the Webster native finished third after a pair of 71s.
Wier, a two-time Empire Player of the Year, nearly averaged par over 21 rounds this season. Recently, Wier placed 31st overall in the NCAA Championships after shooting a combined +14 in the 72-hole tournament. The East Aurora native ranked first overall in the region in score versus par and paced Fisher with 53 birdies and two eagles. The senior placed first in four tournaments this season and recorded seven top-10 finishes overall. Wier's selection marks the third time in his career that he has been named to the Ping All-Region team.
The GCAA further announced the both Wier and Feeney were named to the Division III Cleveland Golf /Srixon All-America Scholar Team for their outstanding marks in the classroom. To be eligible for Cleveland Golf/Srixon All-America Scholar status an individual must be a junior or senior academically and compete in at least two full years at the collegiate level, participate in 50-percent of his team's competitive rounds or compete in the NCAA Championships, have a stroke average under 79.0 in Division III and maintain a minimum cumulative grade-point average of 3.2. A recipient must also be of high moral character and be in good standing at his college or university.
