Ithaca Routs St. John Fisher 8-1; Advances To E8 Championship
MENDON, N.Y. -- The Ithaca College men's tennis team swept the singles matches in an 8-1 win over St. John Fisher in an Empire 8 semifinal match Saturday afternoon at Mendon Racquet Club. The Bombers improved to 10-7 overall this season and advance to the championship match Sunday at 11 a.m. against tournament top-seed Stevens Institute of Technology.
Ithaca led 2-1 after the completion of doubles play with wins by
Wes Davis and
Zach Passman at second doubles and
Griffin Reid and
Chris Hayes at third doubles. Hayes and Reid were 8-0 winners to give Ithaca an early lead and were followed off the court by Davis and Passman with an 8-4 win. The first doubles team of
David Andersen and
Justin Levine dropped their match in a tiebreaker.
Ithaca swept the singles matches. Hayes, Andersen and Passman won in straight sets to give the Bombers the required team points for the victory. Hayes and Andersen both won by 6-0, 6-2 scores. Passman was a 6-2, 7-5 winner at second singles. Reid's match at first singles was stretched to three sets, but he pulled out a 10-5 win in the superbreaker to claim that victory.
Joey Hanf and
Nate Wolf won prosets at fifth and sixth singles.
