Empire 8 track and field athletes completed the first day of the 2014 New York State Collegiate Track Conference (NYSCTC) Outdoor Championship hosted by St. John Fisher College.

Ithaca sophomore Alex Rechen highlighted the day with a state championship Friday afternoon in the pole vault with a cleared height of 3.47 meters. 

ITHACA
Senior Shannon Meehan placed fourth in the pole vault with a height of 3.17 meters.
 
The Bombers also had two score in the long jump, hammer and javelin. Junior Emilia Scheemakerplaced seventh and classmate Christine Benway eighth in the long with ECAC-qualifying marks of 5.37 and 5.30 meters, respectively. Senior Elaine Abdulky placed fifth in the hammer throw with a toss of 43.92 meters to meet the ECAC standard. Junior Kristina Stockburger finished sixth with a distance of 43.48 meters. Sophomore Kristen Pompey, who placed second in the heptathlon on Monday, finished fifth in the javelin and freshman Francesca Boylan was seventh with marks of 33.23 and 30.13 meters.
 
Junior Meghan Cass placed eighth in the 10,000-meter run with a time of 40:27.54.
 
Ithaca's 4x800 relay of freshmen Emily Cranmer and Katrina Clark and sophomores Eliza Dewart and Rachel Doane raced to a third-place, ECAC-qualifying finish of 9:42.80.
 
Junior Harmony Graves and sophomores Sarah Werner and Lizzi Dowling are advancing to the 100 dash finals Saturday. Graves and Dewart qualified for the 200 finals and sophomore Christine Kelly and Dewart will race in the 400 finals.
 
Ithaca is sending three to the finals in the hurdle events. Benway will compete in the 100 hurdles and junior Leigh Martino and freshman Julia Jones will race in the 400 hurdle finals.

ALFRED
Alfred University junior Miasia Hillman has put herself in position to win two sprint titles at the New York State outdoor track and field championships, being held this weekend at St. John Fisher College.
 
Hillman was the top finisher in preliminary heats of both the 100-meter dash and 200-meter dash on Friday. She ran the 100 meters in 12.72 seconds and the 200 meters in 26.01 seconds. Finals for both races will be held on Saturday.
 
Also for AU on Friday, senior Rebecca Graudons failed in her bid to win a third state outdoor title in the pole vault, finishing third (3.27 meters). Graudons, who has three state indoor pole titles to her credit, won outdoor titles in 2011 and 2012.
 
AU senior Chelsea Hall was sixth in the preliminaries of the 100-meter hurdles (16.29 seconds). Finals in that event will be held Saturday.

UTICA
Anastasia Bowden finished third in the 400 dash preliminaries with a time of 1:00.72 and fifth in the 200 meter posting a 26.45. She will run the 400 meter finals on Saturday at 12:40 p.m. and the 200 meter at 2:10 p.m.

The women recorded four team points on day one and sit in 10th place as freshman thrower Bria Hilliard collected two points in the hammer throw, placing seventh, with a toss of 42.24.  The women's 3200 relay team grabbed the other two points as they clocked time of 9:58.73, also placing seventh.

ST. JOHN FISHER
Nicoletta Lattuca placed third overall in the long jump, setting a new Fisher record at 5.53 meters.   Taylor Youngkrans was fifth in the hammer throw with a distance of 45.19 meters, while Danyelle Redmond picked up a point, placing seventh in the pole vault.

Fisher's 4X800 relay team of Sarah Coon, Sammy Van Gee, Sydney Saccone and Kaylee Zbytek placed sixth in the event with a time of 9:55.75, setting a new Fisher record and qualifying for ECACs.

In the 100 hurdles, both Melissa Vaughn and Allison Corretore advanced to the finals.
