HOBOKEN, N.J. (May 7, 2014) – Stevens Institute of Technology men's tennis sophomore
Matthew Heinrich was selected Wednesday to compete in the NCAA Individual Championships in Claremont, Calif., becoming the first player in school history to compete in the tournament in singles.
The selection is the second in-a-row for Heinrich as he became the first Ducks tennis player to compete in the tournament as a doubles team last season. The championship will take place May 22-24 at the Biszantz Family Tennis Center.
Heinrich played exclusively at first singles this season, compiling a 20-4 record against a schedule that included eight opponents currently ranked in the top-30 nationally. Heinrich's only losses came to top-15 regionally-ranked singles players including the No. 24 ranked player in the nation. Going into play this weekend, Heinrich is ranked No. 7 in the Northeast.
Seeding for the tournament will be released on the final day of competition in the team championship.
Before Heinrich competes on his own, you can follow him and the rest of the team this weekend as they compete in the NCAA team tournament. Stevens will open-up at noon on Friday against the University of Southern Maine, playing for the right to play Amherst College on Saturday.
