Presidents & Highlanders Win Season Openers
Washington & Jefferson 2, Wittenberg 1
The Washington & Jefferson field hockey team opened the 2014 campaign with a 2-1 win over Wittenberg at Cameron Stadium.
Both goals by the Presidents came in the early stages of the contest.
Lauren Brown scored 7:45 into the contest on a deflection to the lower right corner with the assist to
Kelsey Bowman. Just under nine minutes later,
Catherine Beaudoin scored her first goal of the season and 24th of her career, moving her into sole possession of seventh place on the W&J all-time goal list.
Caroline Kallos picked up the assist after her shot was redirected by Beaudoin.
Thanks to a ball-control centered attack and strong defensive play, the Presidents held a dominating 16-1 edge on shots through the first 35 minutes.
In the second half, W&J played with a lead and Wittenberg picked up the energy, out-shooting the hosts 11-5, but the Tigers only found the back of the net on one occassion, with a score by Kelly McLean at the 63:37-mark, on a deflection from a shot by Kim Loofbourrow.
For the game, W&J out-shot Wittenberg, 21-12, and held a 12-10 advantage on penalty corners.
Freshman
Karlie Baran earned the win in her first career start, making six saves and allowing just one goal in 70 minutes of action. Sarah Brownell took the loss for Wittenberg, making 12 saves in going the distance.
Houghton 8, Cedar Crest 1
Seniors
Hannah Zgrablich and
Colleen Sullivan each tallied hat tricks as the Houghton field hockey team kicked off the 2014 season in impressive fashion, an 8-1 home opening win over Cedar Crest College on Friday.
It took 16 minutes for the first goal to come for the Highlanders. Sullivan took a pass from
Tyler Reese to open the scoring. Zgrablich would score twice -- in the 22nd and 31st minute -- before
Kristin McKane closed the first half scoring with a goal in the 32nd minute.
Zgrablich and Sullivan scored back-to-back with goals in the 45th and 47th minutes, followed by another goal from McKane and the final tally from Sullivan in the 54th minute.
Freshman goalkeeper
Elizabeth Piszker turned in a solid performance, keeping a clean slate until the final minute of the contest. She stopped five shots for her first career win.
Helping on the offensive end was junior
Kelsie Ashley, who handed out three assists. Zgrablich finished with two assists for a five-point afternoon.

St. John Fisher 4
The St. John Fisher College field hockey team lost its momentum against Kean University, losing 5-4, in the opening game of the Susquehanna Tournament hosted by St. Mary's College of Maryland.
Four Cardinals scored a goal apiece to pace the offense. Senior
Alexis Zakala opened up the scoring with a goal in the 21st minute. Senior
Stacie Skidmore scored a goal of her own in the 25th minute, giving the Cardinals a 2-0 lead heading into the second half.
Marissa Robinson put Kean on the scoreboard with a goal in the 39th minute.
Freshman
Emily Markarian made a memorable collegiate debut by scoring an unassisted goal in the 61st minute, giving Fisher a 3-1 lead. She also tallied an assist on Skidmore's goal.
Kean moved in on Fisher's lead, making it a 3-2 game with less than five minutes left in regulation time. Fisher quickly responded with a goal from junior
Elizabeth Cusack to give the Cardinals a two-goal lead.
Kean's Bridgette Bottinelli scored a pair of goals in the 67th minute and at the buzzer to tie up the game, 4-4. Bottinelli scored the eventual game-winner, nearly six minutes into overtime.

Danielle Famolaro made 14 saves in a complete-game effort.
Marywood 2,
Hartwick 1
Two first half goals were too much to overcome for Hartwick's field hockey team on Friday as Marywood University came away with a 2-1 victory on its home field.
Freshman forward
Claudia Stone tallied in her first collegiate game early in the second half as the Hawks pulled to within one, but 'Wick was unable to even the score over the final 29:07 of action.
The Pacers got on the scoreboard on their third shot of the contest at 15:23 of the first half. Leanne McManus would score off a cross with Amelia Waibel picking up the assist.
Nine minutes, 34 seconds later, Marywood added to its total. Julie Kowalski scored into the left corner and the hosts took a two-goal lead into halftime.
The Hawks came out firing in the second half as they got into the scoring column after just 5:53. Sophomore
Maxine Dunn started the play with a shot that was saved by Marywood goalie Kayle Huey. Stone was there to pounce on the rebound scoring her first goal in a Hartwick uniform and the Hawk deficit was cut in half.
Roughly seven minutes later, the Hawks generated a trio of penalty corners. Stone had a pair of shots blocked and one which was turned away by Huey. Sophomore
Sarah Ryan had the last chance for the Hawks at the 59:02 mark but her shot went wide of the goal.
The Pacers would end the game with a 21-9 edge in shots. They took 12 penalty corners to the Hawks' five.
Keeper
Yanna Boggio, who was also taking part in her first game for Hartwick, made a total of 14 stops in her college debut. Huey finished with three saves.
TCNJ 7,
Stevens 2
No. 11 The College of New Jersey overpowered Stevens Institute of Technology in a non-conference field hockey game in Ewing, N.J. by a score of 7-2 in what was the season-opener for both schools Friday night.
TCNJ (1-0) jumped on Stevens with two goals in the first 3:19 of game time, eventually getting out to a 7-0 advantage with 15:30 remaining in the opening period.
Despite the rough start, the Ducks did not quit and were able to keep the hosts off the board for the final 50:30 of action in addition to notching their first two goals of the year.
Stevens found the back of the net in the 61st and 69th minute thanks to markers from junior
Dailyn Brook and sophomore
Nolie Prouty. Brook's goal came on a blast from from 12-yards out, with Prouty getting an unassisted score from the left side.
The Lions ended with a 26-5 edge in shots and a 7-4 margin in corners. Sophomore
Emily Stukenborg made seven stops for the Ducks in goal.
