UC MXC Opens Season with Third Place Finish at SUNYIT

Marcy, NY (August 30, 2014) – The Utica College men's cross country team kicked off its 2014 campaign with a third place finish at the 2014 SUNYIT Short Course Invitational 6k hosted on the campus of SUNYIT Saturday. Utica's Josh Lee (Glens Falls, NY/Glens Falls) and Kyle Cairns (Midland Park, NJ/Midland ) were the top two finishers for the Pioneers, taking home fifth and sixth place, respectively, with times of 20:05 and 20:12.

Sophomore Erik Winberg (Rome, NY/Rome Free Academy) rounded out the top ten finishers for UC with an eighth place finish, traveling the 6k course in a time of 20:25. Senior Jamie McNamara (Gloversville, NY/Mayfield) placed 21st in the field of 118 competitors with a time of 21:03, while freshman Erik Gleba (Cassville, NY/Sauquoit Valley) was the top rookie finisher for the Pioneers with a time of 21:23.

Corey Zlatniski (Mattituck, NY/Mattituck) placed 33rd with a time of 21:42, while freshman Brian Attas (Hopatcong, NJ/Hopatcong) came in with a time of 22:05 in his first collegiate race.  Sophomore Jason Ortiz (Elmsford, NY/Alexander Hamilton) ran the course in a time of 22:24, good for an average mile time of 6:01.

Freshman Samuel Adarkwa (Bronx, NY/Cardinal Hayes) tied for 52nd with a time of 23:24.  He crossed the line at the same time as classmate Karsten Barbagelata (Ballston Lake, NY/Burnt Hills - Ballston Lake ).

The Pioneers return to the course on Saturday when they travel to SUNY Cobleskill to compete in the Steven A. Warde Invitational.  The men's race is set to begin at 11:50 a.m.
