Bombers, Ducks and Hawks Take Two
STEVENS
The Stevens Institute of Technology women's volleyball team improved its record to 3-1 on the season with sweeps of Mount Aloysius College and Swarthmore College on Saturday at the Salisbury Opener.
The Ducks eased to their straight-sets victory over Mount Aloysius, 25-15, 25-10, 25-14, and hit .306 in the match to go along with nine aces. Stevens never trailed in the first two sets and ran off 10 consecutive points in the second set after a 15-10 score.
Sophomore
Christina Sciarra (Montclair, N.J.) registered a team-best 10 kills and added two service aces and two blocks. Fellow sophomore
Becca Youngman (Rochester, N.Y.) chipped in nine kills to go along with four digs, while junior
Annemarie Thomas (Durham, N.C.) recorded eight kills.
Senior
Ashley Castillo (Cresskill, N.Y.) dished out 35 assists in a solid offensive performance that included four kills and two aces. Castillo also tallied nine digs.
Junior
Kristen Herchenroder (Breezy Point, N.Y.) hit a team-high .625 on five kills in eight attempts, and sophomore
Mary Tobin (Boothwyn, Pa.) finished with nine digs and six kills.
Defensively, freshman
Sydni Horner (Columbia, Md.) posted six kills, while senior
Kirsten Salmins (Wyckoff, N.J.) posted five.
In the final match of the weekend, Stevens topped Swarthmore, 25-19, 25-20, 25-19, and used 10 total blocks (six assists, four solo) with seven aces to finish off the sweep on Saturday.
Freshman
Brianna Evans (Spokane, Wash.) stepped in for the Ducks and notched a double-double with 10 kills and 10 digs, while Sciarra added nine kills, six digs and three aces to her afternoon.
Horner picked up her second 20-plus dig effort in the early season with 23 from the back line and Tobin accounted for 16 digs and six kills.
Castillo also posted a double-double with 26 assists and 13 digs with four blocks.
At the conclusion of the tournament, Castillo and Tobin were named to the All-Tournament Team.
ITHACA
The Ithaca College volleyball team competed at the Brockport Invitational on Friday and Saturday and won all three of its matches to begin the year with a 3-0 record. Ithaca defeated Lasell in straight sets by scores of 25-17, 25-9 and 25-13 on Friday night. The Bombers won both of their Saturday matches by 3-1 scores. Ithaca started with a win over Brockport by scores of 27-25, 24-26, 25-13, 25-14 and then defeated Skidmore 25-22, 22-25, 25-17, 25-20.
In the win over Skidmore,
Rylie Bean led Ithaca with 16 kills and one block.
Dylan Gawinski Sternhad nine kills, and
Caroline Gerulskis and
Siobhan Sorensen had seven kills each. Sorensen added two blocks.
Molly Brown had a team-leading 35 assists in the match.
Kayla Gromen had 27 digs, while Gawinski Stern had 13.

HARTWICK
Hartwick volleyball wrapped up play at the Oneonta Invitational on Saturday with a pair of victories over Curry and Mount Saint Mary. The Hawks, now winners of three straight, improve to 3-1 on the season.
'Wick began the day with a resounding win over the Colonels from Curry College. The Hawks won each set by a large margin, 25-14, 25-11, 25-16.
Sophomore
Hannah Armstrong (Lansing, NY/Lansing) paced Hartwick with 10 kills in the match. She totaled just one error in 16 attacks for a hitting percentage of .562 while adding three aces, two digs, and two blocks.
Freshman
Kayla Baril (Seekonk, MA/Seekonk) contributed six kills and senior
Dana Martin (Chester, NY/Burke Catholic) added five. Sophomore
Quincy Kinzel (Scotia, NY/Guilderland) had 23 assists and registered a match-high five aces.
Curry, which only managed 10 kills in the match, received six from Nicole Grambley.
The Hawks had a more difficult time with Mount Saint Mary, but shook the Knights off in four sets. The two teams split the first two sets with the Hawks taking the first 25-16 and the Knights evening the match in the second by a score of 25-19. 'Wick took the match with identical 25-22 sets, respectively, in the third and fourth.
Martin registered a team-high 13 kills for Hartwick. She added 13 digs. Junior
Taylor Vonasek (Willington, CT/E.O. Smith) chipped in with six kills and had a match-high five aces.
Baril recorded six kills and seven digs. Armstrong and junior
Mary Beth DeCuyke (Johnstown, NY/Johnstown) each had five kills. Sophomore
Alyssa Zeitler (Chardon, OH/Berkshire) contributed a match-high 16 digs.
Armstrong, who was selected to the Oneonta Invitational All-Tournament Team, delivered 31 assists, 12 digs, and a trio of service aces. She finished the two-day tournament with 103 assists.
Mount Saint Mary received a total of 29 kills from Kayla Kurka and Rachel Sabatini. Chelsea Barberan accumulated 36 digs with Kaitlin O'Brien adding 21.
HOUGHTON
The Highlanders swept the Express of Wells College 3-0 in Saturday's match of the SUNY Canton Tournament.
With close scores of 25-21 and 25-22 in the first two sets, the Highlanders sealed the deal with a 25-14 final set over the Express.
Hattie Burgher (Selkirk, NY, Loudonville Christian) recorded an impressive 12 kills, as well as 12 digs. With a close second,
Hannah Compeau (Oxford, MI, Faith Christian) earned 9 kills and 11 digs. Meagan Palm (Lakeland, FL, Lakeland Christian) matched Compeau's kills with 9, while Laurel Wroblicky (Irvine, CA, Northwood) led the way defensively with 22 digs. Highlander setter Anna Coryell (Phelps, NY, Midlakes) finished the match with 25 assists.
ALFRED
The Alfred University women's volleyball team earned its first win of the season Saturday morning, defeating Penn State-Harrisburg, 3-1, at the Gettysburg College Tournament. The Saxons then dropped a 3-0 decision to Bridgewater State in the afternoon.
AU defeated Harrisburg scores of 25-17, 22-25, 25-12 and 25-12 to rebound from a pair of tournament opening-day losses Friday.

UTICA
The Utica College volleyball team split on the second day of the Cortland Invitational. UC dropped the first match of the day to Fredonia State 3-0 (11-25, 17-25, 22-25), before bouncing back to get its first win of the season, 3-2 (22-25, 22-25, 25-22, 25-22, 25-15). Senior
Briona Enny (Queensbury, NY/Queensbury) Was named to the All-Tournament team after her play this weekend.

Allen led the team with 23 assists, while
Chelsea Lauria (Erieville, NY/Cazenovia) had seven and wickwire and Hoerning each added one assists.
Briona Enny (Queensbury, NY/Queensbury) led the squad with four digs.
Facing a 2-0 hole headed into the third set, the Pioneers mounted a comeback to defeat Medaille 3-2. Four players tallied kills in the double-digits including Wickwire, Blaszak, Nicotera, and Hoerning. Allen tallied a career-high 40 assists, as well as a team-best nine digs. Enny had eight digs, and

Andreana Kroup (Gloversville, NY/Gloversville) also had digs.
NAZARETH
Nazareth's women's volleyball team finished action at the Red Dragon Classic with a pair of losses on Saturday. The Golden Flyers fell to Richard Stockton in five sets before falling to Hiram in four sets. The scores of the Richard Stockton match were 31-33, 23-25, 27-25, 25-18, 15-9. The Golden Flyers claimed a two-set lead in Saturday's match before dropping the final three sets. Against Hiram, the scores were 25-20, 25-11, 19-25, 25-12.
Following the Red Dragon Classic at Cortland, Nazareth stands at 0-4. The Golden Flyers will look for their first victory against Hiram at 4 p.m. Saturday afternoon. Following its victory over Nazareth, Richard Stockton is 2-1 overall. Hiram closed Saturday's action with a 4-0 record.

Kassandra Buseck tallied 18 kills and 17 kills, respectively, to lead the Golden Flyers attack.In addition to the kills from Allocco and Buseck, junior

Cady Messmer also chipped in six kills. Sophomore setter
Madi Wickens finished with 42 assists as she directed the Golden Flyers' balanced attack. Wickens also finished with a team-high 15 digs. Classmate
Maureen Thayer recorded an additional 14 kills. Hicks (three), Messmer (two), and Harrigan (two) each had multiple assisted blocks to help Nazareth's defense.
The Golden Flyers had a hitting percentage of .47 on 20 kills during the first set. Nazareth finished the match with percentages of .29 (13 kills), .26 (14 kills), .33 (17 kills), and .0 (four kills) in the following four sets.
Against Hiram, Allocco finished with a team-high 12 kills, followed by Buseck with nine kills. Hicks and freshman
Mallory Cobb added eight kills apiece. Wickens finished with 10 assists while Thayer and sophomore
Rachel Williamson each had nine assists. Nazareth had hitting percentages of .17 in the first set, .17 in the second set, .3 in the third set, and .07 in the fourth set.

Katherine Race had seven digs apiece while Harrigan and senior
Taylor Stabley each had five digs.
ST. JOHN FISHER
The St, John Fisher College volleyball team dropped the final two matches of the New York University Labor Day Invitational on Saturday. Fisher (0-4) took a straight-set loss against Babson College (19-25, 14-25, 21-25) and a four-set loss to Rowan University (19-25, 25-20, 24-26, 15-25). The Cardinals will host their home opener at 7 p.m. Wednesday on Bobby Wanzer Court. Fisher will face D'Youville College.
Babson 3, Fisher 0
The Cardinals trailed the Beavers the majority of the first set after taking the lead at 3-2. Fisher dropped the second set in a similar manner, struggling to keep up with Babson's five three-point runs.
The third set was a different story, however. Fisher and Babson exchanged the lead three times, while tying eight times, including at 9-9. The Beavers then went on a 12-3 run against the Cardinals to make it 21-12. Fisher got within three points, but Babson eventually won by a four-point margin.
Freshman
Anna Marcy continued to impress, leading Fisher with six kills. Junior
Megan Miller and freshman
Madison Karwas added five and four kills, respectively, while also leading the Cardinals in digs with five apiece. Sophomores
Jessica Simonetti and
Brooke Meader added five digs each. Meader also tallied totaled a team-best eight assists.
Rowan 3, Fisher 1
The Cardinals won their first set of the season in the second set against Rowan, despite losing the four-set match. Senior
Paige Willson tallied four of the team's 12 kills in the set, while Fisher overall limited itself to two errors.
Fisher competed closely in the first and third set, but couldn't keep up in the fourth set.
Karwas totaled 12 kills in the match, and Willson and Miller added 10 apiece. Junior
Erica Stickler collected 35 of the team's 45 assists. Freshman
Jordan DeMartino contributed 12 digs.
