Marcy, NY (August 30, 2014) – The Utica College women's cross country team kicked off its 2014 campaign with a third place finish at the 2014 SUNYIT Short Course Invitational 5k hosted on the campus of SUNYIT Saturday. Utica's Ashton Villeneuve (Holland Patent, NY/Holland Patent), a 2013 NCAA qualifier, won the race for the second consecutive season after posting a time of 20:23.  Freshman Makenna Cooley (Remsen, NY/Remsen) began her collegiate career with a second place finish as she crossed the finish line with a time of 20:40, good for an average mile time of 6:40. 

Junior Kate Pearce was the third Pioneer to cross the finish line, placing 24th overall, as she recorded a time of 22:28, while Samantha Bennett (Mexico, NY/Mexico) finished in 27th place with a time of 22:39.

Junior Sarah Depalma placed 35th with a time of 23:05 and Alexandra Buonadonna (Port Washington, NY/Schreiber) finished tied for 42nd with a time of 23:30.  Senior Savannah Bernadin rounded out the Pioneers' top seven finishers with a time of 24:15, good for a 50th place finish in the field of 127.

Alexis Holmer (Utica, NY/T.R. Proctor) tied for 51st with a time of 24:22, while Sarah Renaud (Oxford, NY/Oxford Academy) clocked a time of 24:24 and Abby Schaible (Esperance, NY/Duanesburg) added a time of 24:31.  Alysa Hoffman (Holland Patent, NY/Holland Patent) finished her first collegiate race with a time of 24:37.

The Pioneers return to the course on Saturday when they travel to SUNY Cobleskill to compete in the Steven A. Warde Invitational.  The women's race is set to begin at 11:00 a.m.
