Saxons Top Wildcats 2-1
ALFRED, NY—The AU Saxon's women's soccer team pulled out a close 2-1 win over Penn College Tuesday evening in Williamsport.
Defense was the name of the game coming out of the gates for both teams, as there were only seven total shots on goal in the first half. However, the Saxons were still able to take advantage of their offensive play to close out the half. With under a minute left in the first,
Nicole Lobur (Akron, NY/Akron) set up to take a corner kick. Following the corner the ball was deflected out of the box right back to Lobur who ripped the rebound to the back of the net to put the Saxons up 1-0.
After the intermission, it was
Sammy Jo Shanahan's
(Valley Stream, NY/Valley Stream South) turn to show her skills as she parried away four shots to keep the Wildcats off the board. Shanahan would end the game with seven saves on the night.
The Saxons were able to extend their lead in the 70
th minute, off a corner kick sent in by freshman
Lauren Wyant (Jasper, NY/Jasper-Troupsburg). Delaney Martin (Knox, NY/Berne-Knox-Westerloo) was on the receiving end of Wyant's corner after a rebound came loose inside the box. Martin seized the moment and sent the shot past Wildcat keeper Colleen Bowes. Bowes would end the game with nine saves.
With a comfortable lead the Saxons would continue another fifteen minutes playing solid defense until the Wildcat attack finally broke through the defense for a late goal when Robyn Beddow netted a goal off a Valeria Passalacqua set piece. However, the Saxons refused to concede another goal and posted their second win of the season, 2-1.
AU (2-1-1, Empire 8 0-0) is in action again on September 12
th at Yunevich Stadium at 4pm.
