E8 Football Goes 5-2 in Week 2

ALFRED 34, RPI 31
The Alfred University football team rallied from a 10-point third quarter deficit, then hung on to claim a 34-31 victory at Rensselaer on a rainy Saturday afternoon.
 
AU sophomore quarterback Tyler Johnson threw for 203 yards and a pair of touchdowns, the second an 82-yard bomb to sophomore wideout Brendan Buisch that proved to be the winning points. Johnson also ran for a game-high 166 yards as the Saxons netted 493 yards of total offense.
 
AU survived a late RPI drive that neared the Saxons' endzone with less than four minutes left, but was stalled by a key penalty on the hosts. A potential game-tying field 33-yard field goal missed and the Saxons drove to the RPI 29-yard line before turning the ball over on downs with 10 seconds left. The Engineers completed a 51-yard desperation pass to the AU 20-yard line as time expired. With the win, Alfred improves to 2-0, while RPI falls to 1-1.  FULL STORY 


BROCKPORT 17, Cortland 14
Sophomore kicker Tyler Perna missed two field goals earlier in the game but connected on a 19-yard field goal with two minutes remaining in the fourth quarter to lift The College at Brockport Football team to a 17-14 victory over Cortland Saturday afternoon in Cortland.

Brockport (2-0) took advantage of a Cortland (0-2) mistake in the first quarter to take the early lead. Cortland mishandled a snap on the punt at the end of the first Red Dragon drive and Brockport took over with great field position.  Five plays later, quarterback Wayne Bonsell connected with freshman Nate Wilkinson on a three-yard completion in the end zone as the Golden Eagles took a 7-0 lead.

As time expired in the first quarter, Cortland capped a nine-play drive with a one-yard run into the end zone to knot the game at 7-7.  FULL STORY


UTICA 23, Union 16
The Utica College football team scored 23 unanswered points Saturday, all in the second half, to defeat  Union 23-16 in non-conference play at Frank Bailey Field.  Sophomore cornerback Irvens Eristil led the Pioneers as he recovered a fumble and returned it 17 yards for the go ahead and eventual game-winning touchdown with 12:06 left in regulation. Eristil also snagged an interception and recorded three tackles to help UC remain undefeated at 2-0 on the season.

The Dutchmen didn't waste any time getting on the board as they drove down the field and put up a quick three points on its opening drive.  The home team worked 10 plays for 50 yards as Jon Schaible converted a 33-yard field goal for the first score of the contest.

Union continued its momentum holding UC to a three-and-out on the Pioneers first possession and turned in it into six quick points.  Dutchmen quarterback Connor Eck hooked up with Kyle Reynolds on a 12 yard pass, on third down, capping an eight play 42 yard drive.  Union would not convert the two-point attempt as it led UC 9-0 with just under six minutes left in the first quarter.

After two straight three and outs by the Pioneers, UC finally put together a drive late in the first with eight plays and 33 yards however put the ball on the ground giving Union back the ball to start the second quarter.  The Dutchmen managed an 11 play push to open the second quarter but could not convert a fourth and 10 from the Utica 25 yard line.  FULL STORY 


FROSTBURG 20, Shenandoah 10 
Senior running back Ben Sasu ran for two touchdowns and Frostburg State dealt Shenandoah a 20-10 defeat on Saturday night.

Sasu put the Bobcats up 7-0 in the first quarter and Frostburg never trailed en route to its first 2-0 start since 1999. Shenandoah was looking for its first 2-0 start since starting the program prior to 2000, but settled at 1-1 with the loss.
 
Frostburg held the ball for nearly 34 minutes and ran for three touchdowns while the Bobcat defense stopped the Hornets on fourth down three times on the evening, including twice in the fourth quarter.
 
Sasu led the Bobcats with 75 rushing yards on 11 carries and two touchdowns. He scored the first touchdown with 5:14 showing in the first quarter. The Frostburg defense stopped Shenandoah on fourth and eight at the FSU 25 and the offense used that momentum to the tune of a 10-play 75-yard drive. Sasu finished the drive with a 25 yard touchdown run for a 7-0 lead.  FULL STORY


BUFFALO STATE 60, Manchester University 32
Buffalo State (2-0) found the end zone on its first five possessions and cruised to a convincing 60-32 victory over host Manchester University (1-1) today in a non-conference matchup at Carl M. Burt Memorial Stadium.
 
In his second collegiate start, Buffalo State sophomore Kyle Hoppy finished 16 of 25 for 273 yards with four touchdowns and one interception, and also had 71 yards rushing and a touchdown on eight carries.  Rich Pete finished with 168 rushing yards and two scores on 19 carries, and also had a receiving touchdown, catching two passes for 50 yards.  Mike Doherty added another productive day, with six receptions for 106 yards and a pair of touchdowns.  Shaq Frederick led the Bengals' defense with nine tackles, including one for loss and a forced fumble.
 
Buffalo State averaged 9.0 yards-per-play, piling up 609 yards of total offense, including 336 on the ground.  Manchester finished with 367 total yards, with 113 rushing.   FULL STORY 
 

Morrisville 43, HARTWICK 40
Visiting Morrisville State rallied for 22 unanswered fourth quarter points to pull out a 43-40 victory over Hartwick at Wright Stadium Saturday.
           
The Hawks had went ahead 40-21 in the fourth following two straight pick-sixes from David Van Alstine and Nate Farley 22 seconds apart, but three straight touchdown passes from Lemar Johnson to three separate receivers over the final 10:44 would put the Mustangs ahead to stay. The Mustangs had the ball for just 3:01 total over their touchdown-scoring drives in the fourth.
           
On the ensuing possession after Morrisville took the lead, the Hawks drove to the Mustangs' 35 with less than four seconds left and quarterback John Garcia hit Tanner Williams at the Morrisville nine yard-line but he was tackled by Deston Treasure to end the contest.
           
'Wick running back Greg Bell had a career day with 51 carries for 331 yards and three touchdowns. FULL STORY 


Wesley 43, SALISBURY 5
The Salisbury University football team took its first loss of the season on Saturday night, falling to No. 4 Wesley College, 43-5, under the lights at Sea Gull Stadium.


Junior linebacker Nick Anzallo had 13 tackles to pace the Salisbury defense against a balanced Wesley offense which ran for 161 yards and passed for 319. The Salisbury offense saw sophomore Aarron Moore rush for 51 yards as the Sea Gulls ran for 173 yards in the game.

The Wolverines (2-0) got on the scoreboard first, covering 53 yards in eight plays, capped by Jamar Baynard's 1-yard plunge for the score. It was the first of three scores for the Wesley tailback.

Anzallo made his presence known on the first Wesley drive, recording three tackles, while fellow middle linebacker, sophomore Shane Marvel made four tackles on the drive. Marvel would finish with eight stops in the game.  FULL STORY
