ST. JOHN FISHER 5, Stevens 3 BOX SCORE
Freshman
Emily Markarian recorded the first hat-trick in the four-year history of the St. John Fisher College field hockey program, as the Cardinals earned a 5-3 victory over visiting Stevens Institute of Technology on Saturday.
With the win, Fisher ended the Ducks' 20-game Empire 8 regular-season winning streak that began Sept. 24, 2011 with a 7-1 win over Fisher.
Markarian opened the scoring for Fisher in the seventh minute, finding the back of the net after a
Liz Baldwin shot.
Erin Silvestri gave Stevens its first goal (15:06) to even the score at one apiece. The score wouldn't remain tied for long, as Markarian notched her second goal (16:18).
Stacie Skidmore extended Fisher's lead to 3-1 in the first half when she followed through on her own blocked shot (18:48).
Markarian completed the hat-trick in the 50th minute of play, and
Jill Alaimo scored Fisher's fifth and final goal of the day at the 57th-minute mark to record her first goal of the season.
Victoria Alvarez tried to make a comeback for the Ducks, scoring two goals in the 53rd and 62nd minutes.
Danielle Famolaro tallied 10 saves in 70 minutes in goal.
UTICA 5, Hartwick 2 Box Score
The Utica College field hockey team began its quest for its third consecutive Empire 8 Conference title as it downed Hartwick College, 5-2, in the E8 opener Saturday afternoon. Senior
Alaina Stojkovski led the Pioneers with two goals.
After a scoreless first 30 minutes of action, senior
Louise Steele-Norton found the back of the net to extend her scoring streak to four games. Classmate
Hannah Mackey assisted on the play. The Hawks evened the score just under three minutes later as Maxine Dunn was able to slip the ball past Utica net minder
Kells Casey. Sarah Ryan assisted on Dunn's first of the season.
The Pioneers turned up the pressure in the second half as they outscored Hartwick 4-1 in the final 35 minutes. Stojkovski netted her first goal at 43:41 as she tipped in a long shot from
Colleen Dowling off a penalty corner. Utica extended its lead just seven minutes later when Mackey buried a pass from
Nikki Kieffer for her league-leading eighth goal of the year. The Hawks were able to get one back as Dunn scored a goal of her own, however the Utica defense shut the door the rest of the game.
The Pioneers regained control of the game as they netted two goals in the final 12 minutes to seal the victory. Senior Becki VIvacqua scored her second goal of the season, as she buried a penalty stroke into the upper left corner. Stojkovski capped off the scoring at 66:51 as she put in her own rebound for her second tally of the day.
Utica outshot Hartwick 17-4 and held a 15-3 advantage in penalty corners. Casey and freshman
Samantha Whitehouse combined for two saves, while Hartwick's Yanna Boggio made 12 saves on the day.
NAZARETH 3, Houghton 2
The Nazareth College field hockey team was back in action Saturday, taking on the Houghton Highlanders. The Golden Flyers defeated the Highlanders 3-2 improving their record to 4-2 overall, and 1-0 in the Empire 8 Conference.
Late in the first half, Nazareth's first goal was scored by junior
Maggie Muzio, unassisted. In the second half,
Kelsi Barnholt scored her first goal of the season for the Flyers with the assist from Muzio. The Highlanders were able to tie the game at 2-2 late in the second half with goals scored by Hannah Zgrablich and Kelsi Ashley. In the last five minutes of the game, sophomore
Kailee Coleman scored her first goal of the season to bring the Flyers to victory.
Houghton had two penalty corners and a total of five shots during the game. The Highlanders goalie, Elizabeth Pisker was credited 14 saves. The Golden Flyers had a total of 19 shots and had 12 penalty corner opportunitites. Senior
Shannon Winney encountered four shots on goal and was credited with two saves for the Flyers.
W&J 4, Elmira 1 Box Score
The Washington & Jefferson field hockey team opened Empire 8 play with a 4-1 win over Elmira at Cameron Stadium.
With the win, the Presidents move to 5-1 on the season and 1-0 in the conference. The Soaring Eagles drop to 0-5 overall and 0-1 in the E8.
Caroline Kallos opened the scoring in the 24th minute with a goal off an assist by
Gina Taglieri. Two minutes later,
Allison Morrissey extended the lead off a deflected shot by Kallos, pushing the lead to 2-0, which it remained at halftime.
Lauren Brown scored off a deflected Taglieri shot less than five minutes into the second half to push the margin to 3-0. Elmira scored at the 42:02-mark of the game, and Morrissey capped the day for W&J, finishing after a save by Elmira's keeper to the lower right 90.
W&J held a 19-12 advantage on shots, thanks to a 14-4 lead in the first half.
Amanda Steffey led the Presidents with seven shots and Kallos added five. W&J took 13 penalty corners on the day, compared to 10 for Elmira.
