Houghton Wins; Elmira, Ithaca and Utica Secure Ties
HOUGHTON 3, Canton 2
Three unanswered goals propelled Houghton men's soccer to a 3-2 win over SUNY Canton on the road Saturday.
The host Roos put two scores on the board just two minutes apart midway through the first half to take a commanding two goal lead. But the Highlanders responded just under six minutes later to pull within one. Freshman
Tyler Inch was credited with the score on a 24-yard shot that flew past the Roos keeper. Four minutes later, senior
Jared Toth tied the contest after taking a pass from
Jordan Smith.
The teams went into the break tied at two, and shots were even at seven apiece.
Houghton broke the stalemate in the 61st minute with Toth netting his second of the day. Freshman
Carlos Peregrina got the assist.
Junior keeper
Jacob Dunnett stopped four shots for the win.
Canton finished with an 11-10 edge in shots.
ELMIRA 3, Hilbert 3 (2OT)
The Elmira College men's soccer team (0-3-1) had not scored a goal in their first three contests, but today against Hilbert College (1-3-1), the EC men put three goals on the scoreboard thanks to a heroic effort by rookie forward,
Donte Donegal '18 who netted three goals this afternoon. Donegal's hat-trick helped lead the Soaring Eagles to a 3-3 overtime tie against the Hawks of Hilbert.
The Soaring Eagles did not make things easy for themselves in today's contest as Elmira surrendered the game's first goal at the 4:52 mark of the first half. Then midway through the first half, Elmira gave up back-to-back scores less than two minutes apart, leading to an early 3-0 deficit.
However, Donegal would cut the Hilbert lead to two in the 39th minute as he scored his first collegiate goal on an assist from
Kyle Beekman '18. Donegal's goal sent the Soaring Eagles into the halftime break trailing, 3-1.
With a two goal lead, the Hawks upped the pressure in the second half, outshooting the Soaring Eagles 10-to-5. Fortunately for Elmira, quality over quantity paid off as the Purple and Gold scored two times off of those five shots.
Donegal scored two unanswered goals in the second half to tie things up at 3-3. Donegal's second goal of the contest came in the 55th minute as he quickly fired a shot from the top of the 18-yard mark for the score and then scored his third goal on a header in the 73rd minute.
Tony Barraco '18 was credited with the assist on Donegal's third goal.
Elmira nearly scored what would have been the game-winner in the 86th minute when
Austin Mansell '16 snapped a header that looked like it would find the back of the net. Unfortunately, Mansell's shot caromed off the post, keeping the game at a 3-3 standstill after 90 minutes.
Both teams looked to score in the overtime periods but would walk away from the extra 20 minutes scoreless as the game ended in a 3-3 overtime tie.
Jordan Dougherty '16 got the start in net for the Soaring Eagles today, his first start of the 2014 season. Dougherty made nine saves in 110 minutes of play.
ITHACA 1, Geneseo 1 (2OT)
The Ithaca College men's soccer team battled to a draw with Geneseo Saturday afternoon, tying the Knights by a score of 1-1 at Carp Wood Field.
Senior
Casey Williamson scored the lone goal for Ithaca, while classmate
Jordan Gentile stopped 4-of-5 shots in goal, moving his record to 0-2-1 on the season.
Geneseo scored the first goal of the contest at 19:37 of the opening half. The Knights converted a header after a cross pass through the box, giving them the early 1-0 advantage. Geneseo's lead held until halftime, sending the game to the break at 1-0.
Ithaca responded almost immediately in the second frame, as the Bombers evened the contest in the 48th minute. Junior
Jordan Filipowich took control of the ball at the far side of the Knights' goal line, before sending a perfect pass against the grain back up into the box. Williamson pounced on the pass and beat the Geneseo goalkeeper with a low shot for his first goal of the season.
Neither team was able to convert again in regulation, sending the contest to overtime. The Bombers were able to develop some chances in both overtimes, but strong defense prevailed to reserve the 1-1 draw.
UTICA 0, Oswego 0 (2OT)
The Utica College men's soccer team Oswego State Saturday evening in non-conference action at Charles A. Gaetano Stadium.
UC's overall record moved to 2-1-2 on the season and is back in action Wednesday when it heads to Geneva, NY to face Hobart. The afternoon contest is set for 4:30 p.m. The Lakers, now 1-4-1 overall, return home Wednesday to face Wells College at 4 p.m.
The first 45 minutes of play faired quiet for both squads as the shots were even at three each 3-3 including two apiece on goal. Seniors
Anthony Fotino and
Shane Ruffing along with freshman and
Connor Reagan registered UC's first half shots while Oswego's Connor Lunduski tallied all three for the visitors.
The action picked up late in the second half with play featuring five yellow cards (3 Utica, Oswego 2) and four corners, two by Utica and two by the visitors. However, neither team could convert a score. Oswego's Brody Magro fired two off the post with just over four minutes left in regulation but both were deflected away from the net as the contest headed into overtime.
At the end of regulation, Ruffing had a team-high five shots with two on goal while Reagan added three for UC. Utica goalkeeper
David Abdou tallied six saves while Oswego's Todd Lawson stopped four shots following the 90 minutes.
There was just two shots fired, both by Oswego, in both overtime periods as the contest ended in a 0-0 tie.
NYU 2, ST. JOHN FISHER 1
The St. John Fisher College men's soccer team traveled to New York University on Saturday, falling 2-1 after the home squad tallied the game's first two goals.
With the loss Fisher falls to 1-5-1 on the year, while NYU remains undefeated at 5-0.
Following a scoreless first half, the Bobcats broke through just over five minutes after the break as Nicolas Notaro put back a shot that was initially stopped by Fisher goalkeeper
Josh Klein.
In the 57
th minute NYU found the back of the net on a breakaway to seize a 2-0 advantage.
Fisher kept pushing and finally got on the board as
Mike Lynch played a cross in to
Chris Ferrara who cashed in on a one on one shot for his second goal of the season. The Cardinals however were unable to tally an equalizer in the final 21 minutes.
The Bobcats notched 17 shots in the game, compared to Fisher's six.
Klein stopped eight shots in net for Fisher.
Muhlenberg 1, STEVENS 0
The Stevens Institute of Technology men's soccer team dropped a 1-0 decision Saturday night to Muhlenberg College in Allentown.
The loss drops Stevens to 2-3-0 while Muhlenberg moves to 4-0-0.
Stevens came out strong with a pair of shots from junior
Colin Phillips in the 14
th minute, but both failed to reach the goalie. Muhlenberg came back with shots in the 15
th and 22
nd minutes, but sophomore
Mike Renna made saves on both to keep the game scoreless.
Both teams traded possessions for the reminder of the half before senior
Kevin Calloway took aim in the 42
nd minute, but a team block from Muhlenberg kept the game tied at zero going into the half.
The Ducks had three shots at the break, two of which came from Phillips.
Muhlenberg threatened coming out the break with a shot from junior Tommy Hoffman in the 49
th minute, but Renna made the diving save before making another in the 60
thminute.
After Renna made two more saves in the 60
th and 62
nd minutes, the Mules finally broke through in minute 65. Senior Travis Wantchekon floated a pass across the box where senior Joey Roberts hit in to break the scoreless tie. Calloway attempted an equalizer in the 79
th minute before another from Calloway in the 85
th, but both went wide of the goal to give Muhlenberg the win.
Renna made six saves in goal while Stevens was able to fire 12 shots in the match.
Skidmore 4, NAZARETH 1
Visiting Nazareth received a goal from sophomore
Lucas Bennett a few minutes before halftime to trim its deficit to 2-1, however Skidmore added a pair of goals in the second half to secure the 4-1 non-conference victory. Sophomore
Lucas Bennett scored the Golden Flyers' lone goal.
Following the loss, Nazareth drops to 2-2 overall. With the victory, the Thoroughbreds improve to 4-2 overall.
Bennett scored his second goal of the season following a corner kick opportunity. Bennett collected the loose ball and buried a 12-yard shot under the crossbar. Bennett's goal came with 3:41 to play in the first half. In the second half, the Golden Flyers' best scoring chance came from graduate student
Ryan Foley. Foley's long shot forced Skidmore's goalie Eli Kisselbach to make a diving save. Had Foley found the back of the Thoroughbreds' net, it would have brought Nazareth back to a one-goal deficit.
Skidmore opened the game with two goals in the first 8:31 to take control of the contest early. Adam Beek scored his first of the game with a shot from inside the 18-yard box that slipped inside the right post. Minutes later, Beek assisted on Nick Masiero's second goal of the season. Beek played a free kick to Masiero, who was able to head the ball off the post and into the Golden Flyers' net.
The Thoroughbreds' Augustine Okoye and Kevin Santos scored in the second half. Okoye's unassisted goal, his fourth tally of the season, came 8:20 into the second half. He collected a loose ball from a corner kick and scored from eight yards away. In the final nine minutes of regulation, Okoye assisted on Kevin Santos' first goal of the season. Okoye played a through ball to Santos, who slid his shot inside the right post.
Nazareth sophomore
Nate Ripic finished with a game-high six saves in the loss. Kisselbach had two saves in the victory. The Golden Flyers finished with a 6-5 edge in corner kick chances, but they were outshot 15-9.
