ELMIRA, N.Y. -- The Ithaca College women's golf team is off to a strong start in defending its status as champions of the Empire 8. Ithaca posted a first-round team score of 323 at the 2014 Empire 8 Championships, held at Mark Twain Golf Course in Elmira. The course is playing to 5,829 yards and a par-72. Ithaca has won four-straight conference tournaments and Sharon Li leads all individuals after an opening-round 76. She is seeking her third consecutive conference individual title.

Today's weather did not make things easy for anyone as the field of 20 golfers were forced to start the day in heavy rain and windy conditions at Elmira's Mark Twain Golf Course.  Eventually the weather broke midway through the event but the wind still played a major factor throughout all 18 holes.

Li posted an opening round 76,  and holds a five-stroke lead over teammate Kimberley Wong. Kelsey Baker sits third after an opening-round 82 and Taylor Reeves shot 84 to claim fourth place. Those were the four individual scores that comprised Ithaca's opening round 323. Two other players are in the Ithaca lineup for this tournament, which allows six players from each team entry, and Taylor MacDonald and Kyra Denish are tied for sixth place after matching scores of 91.

The St. John Fisher College women's golf team is in second place overall (391) after the opening round.    Fisher's Ceilia Fitzgerald is in eighth place overall with an opening round 92.  Alexis Juda shot a 98 and is tied for 10th overall, while freshman Jenna Stogsdill carded a 99 and is in 12th place.

Christiann Lerminiaux shot a 102 to close out the scoring for Fisher. Megan Bleck, competing as an individual, shot a 101.

With a team score of 394, the Elmira College women's golf team wrapped-up the first day in third place.

Rookie talent Audrey Clarke '18 led the Soaring Eagles today with a 92, tying her for eighth place. Clarke carded a 43 on the front nine, including a birdie on hole number three, a 430 yard par five.

Second-year golfer Keira Glasheen '17 checked-in next for Elmira with a 98, good enough to put her in a two-way tie for 10th place.  Newcomer Meghan Fonfara '18 and Elizabeth Paolucci '17 had the next two lowest rounds for Elmira as they both shot a 102, putting them in a three-way tie for 14th place.

Giovanna DeLoca '17 and Cassie Chun '18 were Elmira's final two golfers as they recorded scores of 103 and 121, respectively.

Nazareth senior Jennifer Lachell and junior Grace Cardamone finished the first round for the Golden Flyers.

Following the first day's action, Lachell is in fifth place with an 89 while Cardamone is 20th with a score of 127. Ithaca's Sharon Li leads after tallying a four-over-par score of 76. The Bombers hold the top four places and lead the competition with a score of 323. St. John Fisher is second with a score of 391, and Elmira is third with a score of 394. With two golfers competing for the Golden Flyers, Nazareth did not record a team score.

Sunday's final round begins at 9 a.m.
