HOUGHTON
In day 2 of the Lycoming Tournament, the Highlander Volleyball team split the two matches--beating the York College (Pa.) Spartans 3-2, followed by a 0-3 loss to the Cardinals of Catholic University.
 
In what turned out to be a tough first match for the Highlanders, they came out on top beating the Spartans 25-22 and 25-20 in the first two sets. Tying the match 2-2, the Spartans forced a fifth set. The fifth set went according to plan for the Highlanders; beating York 15-8, earning Houghton the win over the Spartans. 
 
After the win over the Spartans, the Highlanders' record improved to 6-3. Hattie Burgher was credited 15 kills and 7 digs, while Hannah Compeau just missed a double-double with 8 kills and 12 digs. Laurel Wroblicky recorded 17 digs in the match against York. 
 
Unfortunately, the win over the Spartans did not carry over to the match against the Catholic University Cardinals.
 
Tied on 13 different occasions in the first set against the Cardinals, the Highlanders forced the set to a "win by 2" rule. Toward the end of the set, Naomi Prentice tied it 24-24 with a kill. Unfortunately, the Cardinals followed up with two kills of their own. After the first set loss against Catholic, Houghton was unable to recuperate. 
 
The second set was similar to that of the first: point for point. The Highlanders were able to score 7 points consecutively, tying the Cardinals at 13. It wasn't until the 19th point where Catholic started to run away with the win. 
 
While the first set forced the Cardinals to beat the Highlanders by two, Catholic was able to confirm the win before it got too close. Two kills by Burgher brought it to a 23-24 Highlander deficit. A Cardinal kill ended the set and match.
 
Burgher earned a double-double, with 17 kills and 11 digs in the match. Meagan Palm was solid offensively with 12 kills. Setter Anna Coryell contributed with 12 digs, while Compeau contributed with 11 of her own. Wroblicky had an impressive 31 digs in the match.
 
 
ITHACA
The Ithaca College volleyball split two matches Saturday at the Ramapo Roadrunner Invitational to finish the weekend event with two wins and a loss. Ithaca improved its overall record to 7-3 through 10 matches on the year. In Saturday's opening match, Ramapo defeated Ithaca in four sets, 27-29, 25-9, 25-10, 25-18. The Bombers rebounded with a three-set win over St. Joseph's of Long Island, 26-24, 25-15, 25-19.
 
Ithaca led for most of the first set, and held its largest advantage of four points with a 13-9 lead after a kill by Caroline Gerulskis. It remained close throughout, and Ramapo had a set point at 25-24 but Ithaca tied it. The Bombers closed the set with back-to-back kills by Rylie Bean to win it. Ramapo won the final three sets.
 
Dylan Gawinski Stern led Ithaca with 11 kills and Joelle Goldstein added 10 kills against Ramapo. Carly Garone had 22 assists. Molly Brown added 12 assists.
 
Kayla Gromen had 27 digs for Ithaca and Gawinski Stern had 14 digs. Ithaca totaled five blocks, one of those was a solo block for Bean. Gerulskis and Gawinski Stern had two block assists each.
  
In the first set against St. Joseph's, Ithaca jumped out to a 15-5 lead and held on for the 26-24 win. The Bombers never trailed in the second set, which Ithaca won 25-15. St. Joseph's started the third set with a 4-0 lead, but Ithaca scored the next nine points. It was close through the middle of the third set, and St. Joseph's eventually built a 19-15 lead. Ithaca scored the final 10 points of the set and won the match.
 
Goldstein led Ithaca with 11 kills on 39 attempts and hit .231 in the match. Gerulskis had six kills, and Kayla Gromen had 18 assists. Ithaca totaled 64 digs, and four players had double-digits in that category as Marlee Wierda had 13, Gromen had 12 and Hannah Robison and Gawinski Stern had 11. Katie Hartman had two solo blocks for Ithaca.


NAZARETH
Nazareth's women's volleyball team dropped its first set then rallied to win the next three sets in both of its matches Saturday at the Union Invitational. The Golden Flyers defeated Oneonta in four sets by the scores of 23-25, 25-16, 25-16, 25-13, then Nazareth defeated host Union in four sets by the scores of 21-25, 25-18, 25-18, 25-21. Seniors Kassandra Buseck and Maria Allocco received All-Tournament Team honors.

Oneonta edged Nazareth in the opening set by two points thanks to 11 kills and nine Nazareth hitting errors. The Red Dragons recorded their 11 kills on five errors for a .182 hitting percentage. With their nine errors, the Golden Flyers finished with a .079 hitting percentage in the opening set.

After the first set, Nazareth rebounded to allow Oneonta only 16 points in the second set, 16 points in the third set, and 13 points in the fourth set. The Golden Flyers had hitting percentages of .036, .393, and .550 in the second, third, and fourth sets, respectively. Nazareth held the Red Dragons to hitting percentages of -.152, -.037, and .269.

The Golden Flyers' offensive attack was led by a trio of seniors. Allocco had 12 kills, Buseck tallied 11 kills, and Olivia Harrigan recorded seven kills. Sophomore Cady Messmer and freshman Abigail Shields added five kills and four kills, respectively. Sophomore Madi Wickens tallied a match-high 26 assists. Wickens and sophomoreMaureen Thayer provided Nazareth with an advantage in serving. Wickens had four aces and Thayer recorded three. Buseck and classmate Katherine Race also tallied multiple aces with two aces apiece. The Golden Flyers had a 13-5 advantage in the category.

Defensively, Thayer amassed a team-high 16 digs. Buseck finished with 12 digs and Wickens contributed 11 digs. Allocco had a solo block and an assisted block. Shields and Buseck each had a pair of assisted blocks.

Against Union, Allocco finished with a match-high 18 kills, while Buseck and junior Jennifer Hicks amassed 15 kills apiece. Harrigan tallied an additional 10 kills, and Messmer recorded five more kills. Similar to its match against Oneonta, Wickens was Nazareth's primary setter, and she accumulated a match-high 42 assists. SophomoreRachel Williamson was also effective directing the Golden Flyers' attack as she finished with 13 assists. Nazareth's attack recorded hitting percentages of .143, .268, .389, and .244.

Defensively, Thayer amassed a match-high 24 digs, and Harrigan also finished in double-digits in the category with 12 digs. At the net, Hicks had one solo and a pair of assisted blocks, Allocco had three assisted blocks, and Wickens had two assisted blocks. Harrigan and sophomore Brianna Spears also chipped in one assisted block apiece. Nazareth's defense held Union to hitting percentages of .054, .152, .129, and .207.


STEVENS
The Stevens Institute of Technology women's volleyball team notched a pair of three-set victories on Saturday in Canavan Arena over Hartwick College and Kean University. With the wins, Stevens is now 8-2 on the year and 1-0 in the Empire 8 Conference with its triumph over Hartwick.

The Ducks continued their streak of seven or more service aces in a match since the first contest of the season, tallying 13 in the opener against Hartwick and eight more in the night cap versus Kean. Stevens also hit a combined .275 in the sweep.

In the conference opener for both teams, the Ducks ran away with the straight sets win, 25-13, 25-13, 25-18. Stevens created a huge disparity in hitting percentage, holding Hartwick to .013, while swinging at a .274 clip on its side of the court. More impressively, Stevens hit .524 in the second set, compared to -.105 for the Hawks.

Sophomore Mary Tobin guided the offense with 11 kills and hit .350 overall. Tobin also recorded eight digs and two blocks. In the second set, she put together a string of three kills in four points to give the Ducks their largest lead of the set at 17-8.

Senior Katie Hall registered seven aces to go along with a pair of kills. After Stevens trailed, 1-0, in the second set, Hall put down a kill and proceeded to put the Ducks ahead, 6-1, on five consecutive service aces.

Classmate Ashley Castillo handed out a match-best 30 assists and also chipped in four kills on a .667 hitting percentage. Freshman Sydni Horner  registered a match-high 15 digs defensively with two aces.

Freshman Brianna Evans finished the match with a .500 hitting percentage on six kills in 10 attempts, while junior Annemarie Thomas went a perfect 3-for-3 in kills with two blocks.

Junior Kristen Herchenroder and sophomore Christina Sciarra each added five kills. Sciarra tallied three aces as well.

The night cap was tightly contested throughout despite a three-set win for the Ducks. Stevens secured its sixth sweep of the season after handing Kean a 25-22, 25-21, 25-17 defeat. Stevens notched 43 kills, which exceeded the Cougars by 14, and hit .133 higher than Kean.

Evans was a true difference maker against Kean after the second set, as she scored 13 of her match-high 14 kills in the final two games. She also posted 12 digs with three aces and hit .480 overall.

Tobin was close behind with 12 kills on 28 attempts for a .321 clip. Thomas hit .400 on 10 swings with five kills.

Castillo once again led all players with 36 assists to go along with six digs, while Horner added nine more digs.

Hall flip-flopped her stat line from the first match, as she contributed seven kills and two aces. Sciarra had four more kills with two aces, while junior Catie Shelton tallied five digs.


HARTWICK
Hartwick volleyball dropped its Empire 8 Conference opener in three sets on Saturday but rebounded with a come from behind five-set victory over Kean University. The Hawks overall record now stands at 4-7 overall.
           
The Ducks defeated the Hawks in match number one 25-13, 25-13, and 25-18. Sophomore Quincy Kinzel registered 17 assists and she tied for a team-high with seven digs. Alyssa Zeitler also had seven digs.
           
Against the Cougars in their second match, the Hawks fell behind two sets, 25-14, 25-13. The Hawks battled back to take the third 25-19 and the fourth 25-20 to force a deciding set to 15 points, 'Wick would prevail by a final count of 15-12 to take the match and get their fourth win of the campaign.
           
Hannah Armstrong tied for a match-high with 11 kills. Dana Martin contributed eight. Zeitler and Kinzel each had nine digs, Armstrong added eight, and Martin notched seven. Kinzel also secured 17 assists for 'Wick.


UTICA
The Utica College volleyball team split its tri-match at SUNY Canton Saturday.  The Pioneers fell to the host Kangaroos 3-0, before rebounding to knock off Johnson State 3-0. 
 
In the opening game, sophomore Brandi Blaszak led the team with nine kills, while freshman Alaina Wickwire had four kills.  Senior Briona Enny tallied 15 digs to stretch her season total to a team-best 101 digs. 
 
In the second game, senior Ashley Jones had a season-best 11 kills, while Blaszak added ten.  Abaigail Mesenthin also helped out on the offensive end with six kills of her own.   Enny added 13 digs to her total, and Lora Allen collected 29 assists to bring her two-game total to 41. 


ALFRED
 The Alfred University women's volleyball team dropped a pair of matches Saturday on the final day of action at the SUNY Oswego Tournament.
 
On Friday AU opened the tournament with a 3-0 loss to Potsdam, then rebounded to take a 3-0 decision from Bard. The Saxons played Wells and St. Lawrence Saturday and lost by scores of 3-0 (25-22, 25-11, 25-11) and 3-1 (25-22, 17-25, 10-25, 17-25), respectively.
 
In the loss to Wells, AU got nine assists, six digs and two solo blocks from freshman Aubrey Totsline and 17 digs from senior Taylor Kiernan. Sophomore Mary Lou Patnaude had three kills and junior Brianna Dudick had three service aces.
 
Freshman Heather D'Andrea paced AU against St. Lawrence, with three aces and 10 digs. Kiernan had 16 digs and three service aces; Patnaude had 11 kills; and Totsline had 22 assists.


ST. JOHN FISHER
The St. John Fisher College volleyball team completed the Rochester Institute of Technology Volleyball Invitational 0-4, going 0-2 on Saturday.
           
RIT's Sarah Szybist tallied 19 kills against Fisher in the first match, as the Tigers swept the Cardinals in three straight sets.
 
Fisher fought back and nearly took the third set, once leading 14-19. RIT went on a six-point unanswered run, though, to regain the lead at 20-19. The two squads battled point-by-point, until the Tigers took the final two points to win the match.
 
Megan Miller fueled the offense with nine kills, while Madison Karwas helped with six of her own. Karwas' 90 kills on the season top the Cardinals leaders.
 
Erica Stickler tallied 14 assists, while Katie Mazierski led the defense with 12 digs.
 
In the nightcap against SUNY Geneseo, Fisher faced another three-set loss, 25-19, 25-23 and 25-20.
 
Mazierski led both the offense and defense with seven kills, an additional 13 digs and a service ace.
 
Miller and Paige Willson added six kills apiece, and Stickler notched 33 assists.


ELMIRA
The Elmira College women's volleyball team had their hands full again today at the Lycoming College Invitational as the Soaring Eagles dropped a pair of matches to host Lycoming College and Susquehanna University. 
 
Elmira College 1, Lycoming College 3 -- 25-12, 21-25, 26-24, 25-12
After dropping the first set, Elmira responded by winning the second set, but not without some drama.  The Soaring Eagles trailed 19-17 in the second but would piece together an 8-2 run, winning the set at 25-21.  EC nearly pulled off another comeback in the third set after trailing 23-17 before rallying to win seven of the next eight points to tie things up at 24 apiece.  However, Lycoming would win the next two points to take the set 26-24, and eventually the match as the Soaring Eagles fell to the tournament host, 3-1.
 
Ashley Heiman '16 recorded 11 kills, marking the second time this season she has posted double-digit kills.  Sami Hanes '16 chipped in with 28 assists while Kierstin Derr '16 and Amanda Blinkinsop '16 posted 14 digs apiece. 

Elmira College 0, Susquehanna University 3 -- 25-8, 25-15, 25-19
In Elmira's second match of the day, the Soaring Eagles faced another tough opponent in Susquehanna University, a team that entered today's contest with 11 wins on the young season.  EC's offense struggled to find their rhythm, totaling just 13 kills as a team.  Defensively, Elmira logged 31 digs as a team with Kelsey Ross '16 leading the way with nine.
