Saxons, Bombers and Ducks Pick up an E8 Win
ALFRED 6, Hartwick 1
The Alfred University women's tennis team scored a 6-1 victory over host Hartwick Saturday afternoon.
AU swept four singles matches and two of three doubles matches to improve to 2-2 overall and 2-1 in Empire 8 Conference play.
Senior
Brennan Ferguson (Destrechan, LA/Ursuline) won first singles, 7-6, 4-6, 13-11; sophomore
Rachel Cook (Youngstown, OH/Laurel Springs) won second singles, 6-1, 6-2; junior
Emma Jackson (Wellsville, NY/Wellsville) won third singles, 6-1, 6-2; and senior
Emily Eisenberg (Oyster Bay, NY/Oyster Bay) took fourth singles, 6-2, 4-6, 10-4.
Cook and Jackson won first doubles, 8-5, while Ferguson and Eisenberg claimed their second doubles match, 8-1.
ITHACA 8, Nazareth 1
The Ithaca College women's tennis team maintained its perfect start to the season with an 8-1 win over Nazareth on Saturday. Ithaca swept the singles matches in the victory, and improved its overall record to 4-0, with a 3-0 mark in Empire 8 matches. Nazareth is 1-3 on the year, and 1-2 in conference matches. The Bombers play again Saturday at home, with a noon start against Houghton at the Wheeler Tennis Courts.
Ithaca won all six singles matches in straight sets, including 6-0, 6-0 wins at first singles by
Haley Kusak and at third singles by
Allison Vizgaitis.
Carly Siegel,
Alyssa Steinweis,
Kelly Fishback and
Maddie Overholt also won in singles play. The doubles teams of Kusak and Siegel and Vizgaitis and Steinweis were winners to start the match.
STEVENS 8, St. John Fisher 1
The Stevens Institute of Technology women's tennis team kept its undefeated season alive Saturday with an 8-1 win over St. John Fisher College in Edgewater.
With the victory Stevens moves to 5-0 while St. John Fisher dropped to 0-3.
Stevens jumped out to a big lead early thanks to its third doubles sweep of the season. Juniors
Alexis Connor and
Julia Guignard started the winning with an 8-3 win at No. 2, followed by an 8-2 win at No. 3 for sophomores
Allie Masciana and
Jillian Morneau over senior Taylor Duquette and freshman Sarah Sorrentino. Senior
Danielle Stewart and freshman
Katrina Guido finished the sweep with an 8-3 win at No. 1.
All three of today's doubles teams are undefeated on the season.
Stewart picked up the team's fourth point with a 6-0, 6-2 win at first singles over senior Sania Zaki, followed by Guignard's 6-1, 6-1 win at No. 2. Guido stayed undefeated in her singles career with a 6-1, 6-1 win over sophomore Olivia Rotondo before Masciana won a point with a 6-0, 7-5 win at No. 6. Connor finished the Stevens scoring with a 6-3, 7-5 win at No. 4.
Keuka 6, HOUGHTON 3
Houghton women's tennis lost to visiting Keuka College, 6-3, at St. Bonaventure on Saturday.Rain forced the match to be moved from Houghton's home outdoor courts.
Claiming wins for the Highlanders were
Molly Freihofer (Mexico, NY, Mexico) in fourth singles,
Mariah Hurd (Morrill, ME, Homeschool) in fifth singles and
Bethany Chesebro (Olean, NY, Olean) and Laura Jacuzzo in first doubles.
