Presidents remain unbeaten with 2-1 win at Bethany
BETHANY, W.Va. (Sept. 2) -- Thanks to a pair of goals off of penalty corners, the Washington & Jefferson field hockey team remained unbeaten with a 2-1 win at Bethany in non-conference action.
With the win, the Presidents open the season 3-0 for the first time since 2011 when they started 5-0. Bethany falls to 0-3 this year.
Caroline Kallos scored her second goal of the year at the 18:16-mark from straight on around 15 yards out off of a penalty corner with the assist credited to
Natalie Paul. The two teams would go scoreless the rest of the half, and W&J held a 1-0 lead at intermission thanks to an 8-1 edge on shots.
In the second half, the Bison turned up the aggressiveness on offense, out-shooting W&J, 9-5. Bethany's Hunter Webster tied the game in the 50th minute, but
Amanda Steffey answered with the game winner just over four minutes late off of a penalty corner, thanks to the helper by
Catherine Beaudoin.
Washington & Jefferson held a 13-10 advantage on shots with Steffey (seven) and Kallos (five) accounting for 12. The Presidents also held a substantial edge on penalty corners with 17 to just five for the hosts.
Karlie Baran improved to 3-0 to begin her collegiate career, making two saves in 70 minutes in goal.
W&J returns to Cameron Stadium for four-straight games, the first of which is Saturday, Sept. 6 at 1 p.m. against Shenandoah (Va.).
