Bombers, Cardinals and Golden Flyers Earn E8 Wins
ST. JOHN FISHER 8, Utica 1
The St. John Fisher College women's tennis squad earned its first win of the season Saturday as the host Cardinals defeated Utica College 8-1 and the Mendon Racquet Club.
Fisher improves to 1-4 on the year and 1-3 in the Empire 8 Conference.
Catie Nonenmacher,
Sarah Sorrentino, and
Alissa Cornacchia each one their singles and doubles matches to help Fisher cruise to the victory. Nonenmacher took second singles 6-2, 6-1, Sorrentino notched a 6-0, 6-0 sweep at third singles, while Cornacchia earned a 6-1, 6-0 victory at fourth singles.
Sania Zaki was victorius in first singles and
Teagan Zingg earned a win at fifth singles.
Eileen Fleming and
Amanda Pendergast led the Cardinals to an 8-1 win at first doubles, while
Taylor Duquette and Sorrentino earned an 8-4 win at second doubles. Cornacchia and Zing rounded out the scoring with an 8-3 win at third doubles.
Fisher's match scheduled for tomorrow (9/21) has been postponed due to weather.
NAZARETH 8, Hartwick 1
Nazareth earned its second Empire 8 conference win Saturday over Hartwick, 8-1. The closest match was at third doubles, where senior Liz Crane and sophomore
Audrey Knorr were able to defeat Hartwick's Caitlin O'Brien and Michaela Finnegan 9-7 to add to the Flyer's other two victories in doubles.
Knorr also had a close match at fifth singles, splitting sets with the Hawk's Lauren Noyes. The Flyer won 1-6, 6-4, 12-10 in a third set super tie breaker after dropping the first set. At sixth singles,
Carlee Hastings pulled out a close match, winning 7-5, 6-3. Seniors Liz Crane and
Adrienne Sharza both won their singles matches 6-3, 6-1 and 6-0, 6-4 respectively. At second singles
Ami Petosa defeated Steph Luce 6-0, 6-1. Hartwick's lone point came at first singles, where Kelly Napolitano defeated Jeanie McCarthy 6-2, 6-1.
ITHACA 9, Houghton 0
The Ithaca College women's tennis team won all nine matches in a 9-0 victory over Houghton on Saturday at the Wheeler Tennis Courts. Ithaca improved to 5-0 on the season and 4-0 in Empire 8 matches. Houghton fell to 2-8 overall and 0-6 in the conference. It was just the second time this season that Houghton was shut out by a conference opponent.
The Bombers dominated the doubles matches, as the three Ithaca tandems dropped just three total games.
Haley Kusak and
Carly Siegel were 8-0 winners at first doubles.
Allison Vizgaitis and
Alyssa Steinweis won 8-1 at second doubles and
Kelly Fishback teamed with
Maddie Overholt to win 8-2 at third doubles. Ithaca won five of the six singles matches in straight sets. Fishback dropped a first-set tiebreaker, but won the second set in a tiebreak and then won the super-breaker third set 10-2.
Cortland 9, ALFRED 0
The Alfred University women's tennis team lost 9-0 to visiting Cortland Saturday afternoon.
The Saxons fell to 3-4 overall with the non-league loss. AU (3-2 Empire 8) was scheduled to play host to E8 foe St. John Fisher on Sunday (Sept. 21) at 1 p.m., but the match has been postponed due to anticipated rain in the forecast. No makeup date has been set.
