GENEVA, N.Y. (September 22, 2014) – After three consecutive days of competition at Hobart College, the Stevens Institute of Technology men's tennis team will return to Hoboken with a singles and doubles Intercollegiate Tennis Association Northeast Regional championship.
Junior
Matthew Heinrich captured the singles crown before teaming with junior
Ben Foran to take the title in doubles. Both championships are program firsts for Stevens.
Heinrich opened the morning with a semifinal matchup against sophomore Nick Litsky of Vassar College. After dropping the first set 6-1, Heinrich rebounded with 6-2, 6-1 wins to take the match. The first set loss was the first of the tournament for Heinrich.
Heinrich rode the momentum into the final match against Pierce Cooper of the College of New Jersey where the junior opened the first set on a 4-0 run en route to winning it 6-2. Heinrich again controlled the lead early in the second before eventually taking it 6-3 to win the championship.
After a short rest, Heinrich returned to the court with Foran for a doubles championship match up with Skidmore College's Steven Koulouris and Nick Tong. The Stevens duo battled to a 4-1 lead in the first set before taking it 6-2. Skidmore clawed back though in the second from a 4-1 deficit to make it 4-3, but Heinrich and Foran regained control and took the final two games to clinch the win.
With the championships, Heinrich and Foran have been named ITA All-Americans and clinched a trip to the national championships later this fall.
