Hartwick Sweeps Utica; Saxons Fall at Home

Hartwick volleyball battled back in the third set to close out Utica in three on Tuesday night at Lambros Arena. Final scores were 25-12, 25-22, 28-26. With the victory, the Hawks earn their first Empire 8 Conference win of the season. They are now 5-10 overall and 1-3 in the league. The Pioneers fall to 6-7 and 1-2 in the E8.
The Hawks led from start to finish in the opening set. Holding a four-point edge, 13-9, a pair of aces from sophomore
Quincy Kinzel and two kills from junior
Mary Beth DeCuyke led the way as the Hawks scored seven of the next eight points to open up a 10-point lead, 20-10. Back to back errors later from UC would give set number one to 'Wick, 25-12.
The second set mirrored the first as the Hawks took the lead and never gave it up. 'Wick led 18-8 in the set but the Pioneers would chip away at the lead. Utica trimmed the margin to just two points, 23-21, on a Lora Allen kill before
Dana Martin and UC's Brandi Blaszak traded kills. With the Hawks one point from a two-set advantage, Martin finished it off with another kill and the Hawks were comfortably in front, 2-0.
The Pioneers took the early advantage in the third set. Hartwick would then gain the upper hand 7-6, and it extended the margin to five 15-10. Just as it appeared 'Wick was headed for the easy win, a service error and four attack errors by the Hawks would help the Pioneers back in front 18-16 as they snatched eight of the next nine points.
Three consecutive Hartwick points, with Kinzel and
Hannah Armstrong each registering a kill, put the Hawks back in front, 19-18. UC responded and went up 24-21 on a Blaszak kill, but Hartwick wouldn't go down as four straight Martin kills suddenly put Hartwick back up 25-24. Following another Blaszak kill, the Pioneers would spoil two chances at taking the lead as back to back service errors put the Hawks on the brink of the victory. Martin once again would settle it with her match-high 15
th kill of the night to put the contest away.
Martin hit .297 for the match. Kinzel recorded a double-double with a match-best 32 assists and 10 digs. Sophomore
Alyssa Zeitler had a team-high 12 digs for the Hawks. Armstrong finished with eight kills. DeCuyke contributed seven.
Blaszak led Utica with eight kills. Briona Enny had a match-high 21 digs. Allen delivered 19 assists for the Pioneers.
D'Youville 3, Alfred 0
The Alfred University volleyball team dropped a 3-0 decision at home to D'Youville Tuesday evening.
The Saxons lost by scores of 25-20, 25-23 and 25-19 to fall to 3-13 on the season.
AU was led by freshman
Aubrey Totsline with 22 assists and six digs and sophomore
Mary Lou Patnaude with six kills, 11 digs and a pair of blocks.
