Stevens Wins Twice; Alfred, Houghton and Utica Split

STEVENS
The Stevens Institute of Technology women's volleyball team capped off a perfect weekend with a sweep of Ramapo College and five-set win over the United States Coast Guard Academy in the Stevens Invitational on Saturday.

Stevens (14-3) hit .333 against Ramapo in the first match and held the Roadrunners to .037 in the opener and then put down 68 kills in the marathon five-set triumph over Coast Guard in its final match of the Invitational.

The Ducks made easy work of Ramapo, 25-12, 25-15, 25-12, and never trailed in the match. Stevens opened the contest with 12 kills and one error for a .393 clip and then hit .240 and .355, respectively, in sets two and three.

Freshman Brianna Evans (Spokane, Wash.) led the way for Stevens with 10 kills on a .529 hitting percentage with eight digs, two blocks and two service aces. Sophomores Christina Sciarra (Montclair, N.J.) and Mary Tobin (Boothwyn, Pa.) each tallied seven kills in the win. Sciarra also added four aces and four digs, while Tobin chipped in seven digs with two blocks.

Senior Ashley Castillo (Cresskill, N.J.) posted a match-high in assists with 32 to go along with five digs. Freshman Sydni Horner (Columbia, Md.) dug out 17 attempts from the Roadrunners to lead all players in that category.

Junior Annemarie Thomas (Durham, N.C.) swung at a .500 rate with five kills in 10 attempts and added two blocks, while senior Katie Hall (Midlothian, Va.) added four blocks, three aces and three kills.

Fellow junior Kristen Herchenroder (Breezy Point, N.Y.) and freshman Mckenzie Kingsbury (San Diego, Calif.) each contributed two kills. Kingsbury was successful in both attempts.

Stevens held Ramapo to just 18 kills in the match and benefitted from 15 attack errors, as well as 11 receiving errors on aces from the Ducks.

In the night cap, Stevens looked destined for another sweep after 25-10 and 25-16 wins in the first two sets, but the Bears responded with a 33-31 victory in the marathon third set and a 25-21 triumph in set four. The Ducks claimed the match with a 15-12 win in the final game.

Tobin also the elusive 20-20 match with 21 digs and hit .421.  Castillo narrowly missed out on her own school record with 61 helpers in the match to go along with 10 digs and four blocks.

Hall posted 15 kills and swung at a .444 rate with six aces, four digs and three blocks. She paced all players in aces and propelled Stevens to 16 in the match.

Horner registered a match-best 31 digs, while Evans added eight more kills to her day with eight digs and two aces.


ALFRED
The Alfred University volleyball team split a pair of matches hosted by Morrisville State Saturday.

AU lost, 3-0, to LaRoche before beating host Morrisville, 3-1.

Against LaRoche, freshman Aubrey Totsline had 17 assists, two digs and a solo block and freshman Jacquelynn Hicks had six kills and five blocks to lead the Saxons.

Junior Chelsea Pietrzykowski had five kills and four blocks and senior Taylor Kiernan had five digs.

Against Morrisville, Totsline had 26 assists and four digs; Hicks had eight kills and three blocks; and freshman Heather D'Andrea had six kills and seven digs.

Kiernan had 17 digs and five service aces, and sophomore Mary Lou Patnaude had seven kills and four digs.


HOUGHTON
Hattie Burgher earned all tournament honors after registering 20 kills and 20 digs over two matches at the SUNY Canton Classic.

The Highlanders defeated Rochester Institute of Technology 3-0 (25-18, 25-18, 25-14) in the opening match as Burgher recorded eight kills and 14 digs. Anna Coryell added 16 assists to lead the offensive attack while Laurel Wroblicky added 13 digs defensively.

In the second match, Houghton came up short to St. Lawrence, 3-1. Burgher finished with 12 kills and six digs. Coryell chipped in with 30 assists, while Wroblicky added 15 digs. Houghton also got 10 kills from Jaclyn Algier and 11 digs from Alyssa Quimby.


UTICA
The Utica College volleyball team split on the second day of the Wildcat Classic, hosted by SUNYIT, Saturday afternoon.  The Pioneers fell to the host Wildcats 3-1 in the opening game, before defeating Elmira 3-1 in the second game of the day.  With the win over Elmira, the Pioneers snap a four-game losing streak.
 
Once again, sophomore Brandi Blaszak (Marcy, NY/Whitesboro) led the team with nine kills and two aces in game one.  Freshman Alaina Wickwire (Towanda, PA/Towanda) had eight kills followed by Laura Homer-Gunther (Sauquoit, NY/Sauquoit) with five, and Samantha Hoerning (Farmingville, NY/Sachem East) with four.  Junior Lora Allen (Dolgeville, NY/Dolgeville) had 27 assists, and senior Briona Enny (Queensbury, NY/Queensbury) had 11 digs, marking her tenth game with ten or more digs.
 
Utica rebounded in the second game of the day to knock off Elmira College behind a 12-kill performance by Blaszak.  Senior Ashley Jones (Charlton, NY/Galway) was second on the squad with nine kills and Homer-Gunther, Wickwire, and Lora Allen (Dolgeville, NY/Dolgeville) each had six kills. Allen also tallied 35 assists in the win, while Briona Enny (Queensbury, NY/Queensbury) had 24 digs, and Chelsea Lauria (Erieville, NY/Cazenovia) chipped in with 11 digs of her own. 


ELMIRA
The Elmira College women's volleyball team (2-14, 0-3 E8) dropped a pair of matches in the second day of the SUNY IT Tournament today. The EC women fell 3-1 to both Alfred State College (25-17, 23-25, 25-18, 25-15) and Utica College (15-25, 20-25, 25-21, 22-25).

The Soaring Eagles suffered their second loss in three days to the Pioneers of Alfred State.  Elmira split the first two sets but were unable to push things to a fifth as Alfred State won the final two sets. 

Paola Ortiz '16 led Elmira with nine kills while Sami Hanes '16 setup the EC offense, logging 32 assists.  Kelsey Ross'16 led the Soaring Eagle defense with 13 digs.

The Purple and Gold dropped the second match of the day against Utica College. After falling 2-0, Elmira fought back and won the third set but could not use momentum to tie up the sets as the Pioneers won the fourth set.

Ross led the defensive charge with a career-high 36 digs while Ashley Heiman '16 tallied 17 kills in today's contest.  Hanes, once again, set up Elmira's offense with 42 assists.


ST. JOHN FISHER
The St. John Fisher College volleyball team dropped its final two matches at the Skidmore Invitational on Saturday, losing 3-1 to The Sage Colleges before suffering a 3-0 decision to Middlebury College.  Freshman Madison Karwas, who tallied 23 on the day, was named to the All-Tournament Team.
 
The Cardinals came out strong in the first set against Sage, but couldn't keep the momentum going and ended up losing in four sets (25-21, 22-25, 16-25, 23-25) in their first match of the day.
 
Madison Karwas led the Cardinals with 17 kills in the match, while Anna Marcy chipped in an addition 12.  Brooke Meader (22) and Erica Stickler (19) contributed 41 of Fisher's 47 assists. Junior Erin Crandall also tallied 21 digs in the loss.
 
Karwas led the Cardinals against Middlebury with six kills, while Strickler totaled 25 assists.   Jessica Simonetti was Fisher's top defensive player, finishing with a team-high 12 digs.


HARTWICK
Hartwick (6-12) was looking to get its second straight win at the Canton Classic today after registering a 3-1 victory over host St. Lawrence last night. The SUNY Canton (13-4) Kangaroos had other ideas as they earned a three-set victory over the Hawks to close out the tournament. Scores for the match were 25-14, 25-14, 25-15.
           
Senior Dana Martin had a team-high eight kills and she added 10 digs. For her efforts over the weekend, she was named to the All-Tournament Team.
           
Sophomore Alyssa Zeitler recorded a team-best 15 digs in the match for 'Wick. Classmate Quincy Kinzel  added 15 assists and seven digs.
           
The Roos had three players with at least eight kills. Jessica Reynolds recorded a match-high 10 with Morgan Bills contributing nine and Kelsy Cornish adding eight.
