HOUGHTON 2, Wells 1
The Highlander Field Hockey team was able to capitalize on scoring opportunities in Wednesday evening's game against Wells College, defeating the Express 2-1.
Nearly 13 minutes into the first half, junior
Kristin McKane put the Highlanders on top with a 1-0 lead. This would be the first of 6 shots that McKane would take on the evening.
Emma Strehle was credited with the assist.
Defensively as a team in the first half, the Highlanders did not allow for any Express shooting opportunities. Houghton
closed the first half by giving the Express a 1-0 deficit.
The Highlander defense was very solid throughout the entire game, allowing for only 2 Express shots on goal. One of those shots, however, was successful just 10 minutes into the second half. As a result, the score was tied 1-1.
Another goal from McKane at 64:39 would mark her 4th goal of the season, putting the Highlanders up 2-1. Freshman
Alyson DeMerchant was responsible for the assist in McKane's second goal of the night.
There was less than 30 seconds in the half when the Express threatened to score on a penalty corner. The two shots that were taken by Wells were unsuccessfull, sealing the win for the Highlanders.
Rochester 2, NAZARETH 1
Senior
Shannon Winney amassed a game-high 23 saves for host Nazareth, however, visiting Rochester found the back of the Golden Flyers' goal twice in the second half to take a 2-0 lead, and Rochester went on to the 2-1 victory. The second Yellowjackets' goal, by Gina Cunningham, came with roughly eight minutes to play in regulation and ended up being the game-winning score. Nazareth sophomore
Kristina Back scored the Golden Flyers' lone goal with 2:08 to play in regulation to trim the deficit to one. Winney's 23 saves is a career-high and is only four saves shy of the Nazareth record of 27, which Kelsey Evans recorded in 2010 against Geneseo.
With the non-conference loss, Nazareth falls to 1-1 overall. Following the victory, the Yellowjackets improve to 2-0 overall.
Rochester had several scoring opportunities during the opening minutes and throughout the first half. The Yellowjackets' Michelle Relin tallied the first four shots, and she finished with 18 total shots on the evening. The Golden Flyers' defense held her scoreless until 10:38 into the second half when she converted a penalty corner opportunity. Alexis Wood started the penalty corner and passed to Belle Hoagland. Hoagland stopped the ball and redirected it to her left. Relin was waiting with a long shot from the top of the arc, which found its way past Winney. The Golden Flyers were down a player during the penalty opportunity as junior
Magill Woodruff was given a green card moments earlier.
The Yellowjackets' second goal, by Cunningham, was on a break away opportunity. With Cunningham dribbling toward Nazareth's goal, Winney charged from the goal line then slid and stacked her pads to try to make the save. Cunningham's score was her second of the season.
Back put Nazareth on the board in the final minutes following a pass in front of the Rochester goal by junior
Maggie Muzio. Back's goal was her first of the season and the sixth of her career.
Despite a plethora of Rochester shots, Nazareth's defense and Winney held the Yellowjackets scoreless through the first half and ran their scoreless streak to over 115 minutes before Relin's goal. During the first half, Winney amassed 15 saves and the Golden Flyers' senior
Isabel Wittmaack was credited with a defensive save as Rochester had 27 shots in the opening 35 minutes. In the second half, Nazareth trimmed the Yellowjackets' shots to 13. Rochester, however, had 11 penalty corners in the second half to give them a 17-2 advantage in the category for the game.

RPI 3, HARTWICK 1
Hartwick field hockey held off visiting RPI (1-1) in the opening half, but the Engineers found the net three times in the second in a 3-1 win over the Hawks Wednesday at Wright Stadium.
RPI broke the ice at 47:13 and added its second tally less than six minutes later. Hartwick battled back to cut the deficit in half at the 55:29 mark but the Engineers would get an insurance goal 3:49 from the final whistle for the two-goal win.
The visitors had the majority of possession in the first half of play but the Hawks managed chances to score with both originating from freshman
Claudia Stone. With under 26 minutes left in the half, Stone drove up the right side and sent a pass across the goal mouth. Her pass, however, skipped through a pair of Hawks with neither able to get a stick onto it. With under 13 minutes left, Stone fired from the left side but was turned away by RPI keeper Hilary Fiorentino.
Hana Murphy and Cecilia D'Agostino combined for RPI's first tally. D'Agostino moved across the circle to the left side of Hartwick's goal and sent the ball back across into the middle. Murphy was waiting to slam her shot past 'Wick's
Yanna Boggio for the 1-0 lead.
Five minutes, 54 seconds later, Angela Cascio finished off a scramble in front of the Hawks' cage to extend the RPI advantage to two. D'Agostino was credited with her second assist of the contest.
The Hawks refused to go down quietly and they needed just 2:22 to get on the scoreboard. Stone played a ball into the middle just in front of the RPI net. Freshman
Mackenzie Bond was there to get her stick on the ball which popped up and over Fiorentino and in to make it a 2-1 game. The goal marked the first for Bond in a Hartwick uniform.
'Wick nearly evened the game with just over five minutes left as sophomore
Maxine Dunn, after a long run, broke in alone with Fiorentino. She would be denied a shot at the last second as RPI defender Chloe Hutchinson caught up with Stone and picked her pocket, bringing the ball out of danger.
RPI added a third goal with under four minutes left as Claire Cecilio finished off a rebound following a shot from Murphy which was stopped by Boggio.
The Hawks had one last chance with 2:25 to go as Dunn fired another shot at the RPI cage but Fiorentino was there for her third and final save of the evening.
