Fast Start Helps Elmira Sweep Wells

Aurora, NY -- The Elmira College women's tennis team picked up right where they left the 2013-14 season by defeating Wells College, 9-0, in EC's season opener. This is the first time in 15 years that the Soaring Eagles have won their season opener having lost 13 of their previous 14 season openers to conference opponents.
The Purple and Gold got off to a quick start thanks to strong doubles play. The second doubles team of
Amy Schmidt '15 and
Kristi Chanda '17 closed out an easy 8-0 win, followed by an 8-4 victory by the first doubles team of
Kayla Fitzgerald '15 and
Ellen Plowman '16. The closest of the three doubles matches was at the third spot where
Stephanie Tock '16 and
Megan Boisclair '15 were going back and forth with their opponents. The duo from Elmira would prevail, pulling out an 8-6 win and moving EC's lead to 3-0.
It was much of the same in singles play as Elmira took matches at first, second, third, and fourth, only giving up six combined games in the process. Schmidt won 6-2, 6-1 at first singles and her classmate, Fitzgerald, nearly matched her score, winning 6-1, 6-2 at the second spot. EC also got a pair 6-0, 6-0 wins from Plowman and Chanda at third and fourth singles, respectively.
Elmira was looking for their second consecutive 9-0 result over Wells, but the two remaining matches were both being played tightly. Tock, similar to last season's matchup with the Express, found herself in a close first set, but the junior came out on top, 7-2, in the first set tiebreaker and then cruised to a 6-2 win in the second set. Boisclair received a scare from her opponent at sixth singles, but completed the sweep with the 7-5, 6-1 straight set victory.
EC will begin its Empire 8 Conference schedule this weekend with a match at St. John Fisher College. That match is set for Sunday, September 7th at 1:00 p.m. in Rochester, NY.
