Houghton Earns First Win of Season over Buffalo State
FREDONIA, N.Y. -- Houghton men's soccer broke into the win column with a 2-0 win over Buffalo State College in the first round of the Fredonia State Blue Devil/Clarion Classic on Friday.
The Highlanders took a while to get any offense going in this one as the Bengals held 6-1 shots advantage over the first 45 minutes and the teams went into the break scoreless.
Houghton keep
Jacob Dunnett (Quispamsis, New Brunswick, Kennebecasis) did his part, stopping a PK in 35the minute to keep the slate clean.
In the second half, it was Houghton's leading scorer from a year ago,
Landon Sheaffer (Richfield, PA, East Juniata), getting the Highlanders on the board. Sheaffer was there to knock in the rebound after a shot by
Mitch Beattie (Maitland, Ontario, St. Mary Catholic). Freshman
Carlos Peregrina (Phoenix, AZ, Westview) added an insurance goal with four minutes left off an assist from
Cory Brautigam (Doylestown, PA, Plumstead Christian), who turned a strong performance at left back.
Dunnett finished with six saves to earn the shutout win.
The Bengals held a 13-9 shots advantage. Corners were even at four apiece.
The Highlanders take on the host Fredonia Blue Devils on Saturday at 5 p.m.
