Stevens Tallies Lone Field Hockey Win

STEVENS 5, Kean 4
The Stevens Institute of Technology field hockey team poured in four second-half goals en route to a 5-4 come-from-behind win at Kean University on Saturday afternoon in Union, N.J.
 
Trailing 4-1 just 2:32 into the second half, the Ducks were able to tally four unanswered goals to earn their first win of the season. Junior midfielder Erin SIlvestri put the Ducks up 1-0 in the 24th minute, but the hosts ran off two-straight scores late in the first to take a 2-1 margin into the intermission. Junior Dailyn Brook notched the assist on the Silvestri marker, inserting to her classmate for a blast from the top of the circle.
 
Kean notched two goals just 21 seconds apart early in the second half before Stevens swung the momentum and began its comeback.
 
At 41:50, the Ducks began to climb back, getting a score from freshman forward Victoria Alvarez. On the play, the rookie was able to tame a rebound and find the back of the cage. Just 55 seconds later, Brook got on the board, fighting for and controlling a loose ball in front before notching her second goal of the year.
 
Alvarez pulled Stevens even with her second of the game and third of the year thanks to another Brook assist from a penalty corner at 45:05.
 
The two teams played scoreless hockey over the next 23:31 before Silvestri's second gave Stevens the lead with 1:24 left. The goal was assisted by Brook and again came thanks to a penalty-corner-insert. It was the Ducks' third goal resulting from a penalty corner in the game.
 
Stevens goalie Emily Stukenborg made a career-high 18 saves for the Ducks in an excellent performance for the second-year starter. Kean finished with a 35-29 margin in shots, but the Ducks took 16 to the Cougars' 15 in the second period. Kean also finished the contest with a 17-13 edge in penalty corners.


Oswego 4, NAZARETH 3 (OT)
Lisa O'Callaghan scored the game-winning goal 6:50 into overtime to lead visiting Oswego to a 4-3 non-conference victory over Nazareth on Saturday afternoon. The Golden Flyers' junior Catherine Willard tied the contest with 1:54 to play in regulation to force the extra session. Junior Cathy Stahl and sophomore Kristina Back also scored for Nazareth.

Oswego struck first with an unassisted goal by Danielle Cronk 9:20 into the game. The Lakers' lead, however, lasted less than three minutes as Stahl scored on a penalty corner opportunity for Nazareth. Sophomore Kailee Coleman earned the assist with her pass to Stahl. The teams traded goals again before the end of the period to begin the second stanza with a 2-2 tie. Cronk scored Oswego's second goal minutes after Stahl tied the contest for Nazareth. Jenna Jevons was credited with the assist. With 20 seconds remaining in the first half, Back answered for the Golden Flyers. Back's unassisted goal was her second of the season.

Roughly 30 scoreless minutes went by in the second stanza before Sam Perez scored to give the Lakers their third one-goal lead of the game. Perez's goal came with only 5:40 to play in regulation. Nazareth answered in the final two minutes to force overtime. Back assisted on Willard's game-tying goal to force the extra period.

Sarita Charap amassed a game-high 13 saves in 76:50 of action to earn the win. Senior Shannon Winney had eight saves for Nazareth in the loss. The Golden Flyers finished with a 20-14 advantage in total shots and a 9-8 edge in penalty corner chances. Junior Maggie Muzio had seven total shots for Nazareth, including five on goal. Stahl and Willard each had four total shots. Cronk led the Lakers with six shots, all of which were on goal.


Ohio Wesleyan 2, HOUGHTON 0
Houghton field hockey's record fell to 2-2 on the year after a 2-0 loss at home to Ohio Wesleyan University of Saturday.

The Battling Bishops scored a goal in each half.

Early on it was a stalemate as the teams played evenly, with neither getting any scoring opportunities. But OWU found their way into the Highlanders' end and registered three penalty corners and a shot over a two-minute span from the 12th to 14th minutes. Houghton would get a shot from Colleen Sullivan after an impressive run up the field, but the try went just wide. The Bishops scored in the 27th minute and took that 1-0 into the break.

OWU kept up the offensive pressure in the second half, outshooting the Highlanders 11-0, and getting an insurance goal in the 57th minute.

The visitors outshot the Highlanders 16-1 on the night.

Houghton keeper Elizabeth Piszker was impressive again and kept more OWU goals off the board with eight saves.


St. Lawrence 4, HARTWICK 1
Host St. Lawrence scored all four of its goals in a 19:10 span in the first and second halves to come away with a 4-1 victory over Hartwick Saturday at North Country Field in Canton, NY. Hartwick got on the scoreboard late in the second half on the first career tally from sophomore Rebecca Reilly.
           
Despite the setback, the Hawks were outshot in the game by a narrow margin, 19-17. Ten different Hartwick players recorded at least a shot with six registering two or more.
           
The teams battled to a scoreless draw through the opening 23 minutes of the contest. The Saints drew first blood at 23:26 as Mikaela Thompson fed Sam Haab for a tap-in for a 1-0 edge.

Three minutes, 57 seconds later, St. Lawrence added to its total. Erica French scored from in close with Camille Burger picking up the assist and the Saints had a two-goal cushion.
           
The Hawks nearly made it into halftime down by two but SLU's Maggie Wraight dribbled through a couple of Hawk defenders and fired in with just 29 ticks left in the period to further the Saints' advantage.
           
Early in the second half, Kara Pelosi completed the St. Lawrence scoring for the day. French earned the helper.
           
Hartwick pressured the Saints' cage throughout the second half. The Hawks would outshoot their hosts by a 14-10 margin and held an 11-3 advantage in penalty corners for the 35 minutes. 'Wick would finally be rewarded when Reilly found the cage from the middle of the circle with 1:34 showing on the clock.
           

New Paltz 4, UTICA 2
The Utica College field hockey team had its season-opening win streak snapped Saturday as it fell to host SUNY New Paltz, 4-2. 
 
Utica jumped out to a 1-0 lead just 8:40 into the contest as senior Louise Steele-Norton scored her third goal of the season.  Steele-Norton came down on a 2-on-1 with classmate Chasity Eckert and buried the pass from Eckert to take the lead.  The Pioneers added another goal just before the half as senior Adriana Surprenant buried a long shot for her first goal of the year.
 
The second half was all New Platz as the Hawks scored four unanswered goals to seal the victory.  Deidre O'Connor and Erin Landy each had a goal and an assist and Dani Ackerman and Jessica Caruana also scored for New Paltz.  Junior Kells Casey made a season-high eight saves, while her counterpart, Alayna Wageman had six saves.


Shenandoah 2, WASHINGTON & JEFFERSON 0
Shenandoah scored a pair of goals in the first 11 minutes of the game and the Presidents were unable to recover, suffering a 2-0 defeat in non-conference action at Cameron Stadium.

With the loss, the first of the season for the Washington & Jefferson field hockey team, the Presidents fall to 3-1. The Hornets improve to 2-1 on the year.

Both goals scored by Shenandoah came early in the contest, as they found the back of the net just 4:08 into the game and then again at the 10:51-mark.

W&J held a 5-2 advantage in shots in the first half, but the guests led for the game, 12-5. Amanda Steffey led W&J with a pair of shots. Lauren BrownCaroline Kallos and Gina Taglieri each added one shot.

Karlie Baran suffered the first loss of her collegiate career, allowing a pair of goals and making four saves in 18:57. Morgan Brozen played the final 51:03 and did not face a shot on goal. The Presidents also made two team saves.


Delaware Valley 8, ELMIRA 1
The Elmira College field hockey team (0-2) fell on the road this afternoon to the Aggies of Delaware Valley College (1-2), 8-1.  Elmira's Alison Mariano '18 scored EC's lone goal of the afternoon, the first goal of her EC career.
 
The Soaring Eagles defense held off the Aggies' offense for the majority of the first half but Delaware Valley would score four first half goals in the final 12:33 of the half to take a commanding 4-0 halftime lead.  Delaware Valley made it 5-0 shortly after the halftime break but the Purple and Gold would trim the lead back to four on a Mariano goal at the 46:08 mark of the second half.  Fellow classmate Atupele Machika '18 recorded her first career assist on Mariano's goal. 
 
Unfortunately for the Soaring Eagles, Mariano's goal was not enough to spark a comeback as the Purple and Gold fell to the Aggies, 8-1.  Elmira goalkeeper Mikayla Rebusmen '17 got the start this afternoon and played in all 70 minutes, making a career-high 19 saves.
