NAZARETH 4, Ohio Wesleyan 1
Junior
Catherine Willard scored two goals and added two assists Sunday as Nazareth evened its field hockey record at 2-2 with a 4-1 non-conference victory over visiting Ohio Wesleyan.
The game was Nazareth's second of the weekend as the Golden Flyers also fell to Oswego Saturday 4-3 in overtime. Ohio Wesleyan defeated Houghton, 2-0, on Saturday, but dropped to 2-1 overall with Sunday's loss.
Willard, of Pittsford, N.Y. and a graduate of Pittsford Sutherland, is a transfer to Nazareth from Mercyhurst, where she played in 2011. She scored her first Nazareth goal Saturday against Oswego and then scored the first goal of Sunday's game off an assist from
Maggie Namy in the game's seventh minute.
Later in the half, junior
Maggie Muzio netted her first goal of the season as she knocked in a shot inside the right post after receiving a pass from Willard. Ohio Wesleyan cut that lead in half in the 17th minute as a shot by freshman Julia Melio went through the legs of Nazareth goalie
Shannon Winney following an Ohio Wesleyan penalty corner.
Willard and Muzio hooked for Nazareth's third goal, which came 13 minutes into the second half. Freshman
Kelsi Barnholt intercepted a pass in the Ohio Wesleyan end and passed to Muzio on the right wing. Muzio then threaded a pass to Willard, who fired a shot past OWU goalie Kayla Wayne. Nazareth scored again in the 64th minute when a shot by Willard was deflected into the goal by senior
Sibongile Chisi, who was credited with her second goal of the season.
Ohio Wesleyan had advantages in shots (14-9) and penalty corners (15-2), but the Golden Flyers prevailed thanks to 10 saves from Winney. Wayne made five saves for the Battling Bishops.
